Really a great shot. Love how the leaves frame 3/4 of the face, just enough to make is interesting without overpowering.

I'm glad you asked don't feel layman as you'll never learn much if you don't ask. RAW is a setting on mid to high range cameras were the sensor captures all the data it sees and records it on your memory card uncompressed. Most shoot .jpeg which the camera has processed and compressed for you.But a lot of information gets lost compared to editing it your self(you must have software that will work with Raw). You have the ability to really tweak your image before you compress and save in what ever compressed format you want eg. bitmap, jpeg, tiff. These all have different compression ratios. Also your original RAW image can not be altered so it's like keeping a negative in film photography. I hope that explains it. Others may want to add or correct me if I'm wrong. This is the way I understand RAW:shrug:

You are right Wayne. You get much more data shooting raw. The camera records all the data. If you shoot jpeg the file is compressed and only part of the image is recorded. When you open a jpeg file on your computer the computer generates the pixels that were not saved by reading what is next to the unrecorded data. When you shoot raw you have a much larger file. It is sort of like your gas tank being full (raw) or 1/4 tank (jpeg).

I love shooting raw. Of course the processing of the photos takes a bit more time, but the quality of the file/image is well worth the extra time.

Edited to add. When I work on my photos I never save as a jpeg. You can open and close a jpeg file and not lose any data but when you work on the file, then close it you lose data.

I have an older Olympus digital, I got it right before they started bringing out the digital SLR's. It has good optical zoom and I can do shots with manual ISO Aperture, but no RAW. What I really want is an SLR since I can do so much more with that. ANY reason for a new camera works for me. LOL Maybe for Christmas???
