Loss of a Dog

Here is a poem my son found. I am sure that it is not new and that it brings comfort to those in need.

LOSS OF A DOG
If you've ever known the joyful sound
Of barks that fill the air-
A sloppy kiss, a friendly paw,
A quiet adoring stare-
If you've ever had a special friend
To share a tear or two,
Or maybe just a wagging tail
To lift you when you're blue-
If you've ever felt the wrenching pain
That only death can send,
Then you have lost
Not just a dog-
You've truly lost a friend.
But God is good and treasures love
And there at Heaven's gate-
A sloppy kiss, a joyful bark-
Your precious friend awaits

That is a great poem. There is such truth in it..I love my Murphy so much, just thinking that some day there will come an end, makes me sad to think about it..he brings me so much joy, I love every day with him

Sonny,
I'm very sorry you're going through this. I'd like to hear more about Sergeant if you feel like sharing anything. My first dog was a german shepard/malamute named Sarge - my parents got him before I was born. I still miss him.

Welcome to the board.

Sonny,

I will also say a special prayer for you on Monday.... I've been in your shoes, and it's not easy at all... it is heartbreaking. However, you're doing the kindest thing for your best friend.... and that is what counts.

Bless you... and when you feel up to it, please share your memories with us.... He will always live on in your heart.

I'm so very sorry. I wish we never had to be separated from those we love. But I believe that that love never ends. I will be praying for you and your friend. There is a place to remember our pets online. It's called PetLoss.com You can access the web site at www.petloss.com On Monday nights (7pm Pacific time) there is a chat where we can all memorialize and remember the pets we have lost. It helped me tremendously when my own girl was euthanized. Even now, I go back now and then to read the poems and join the chat.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I went through this last year with our old man cat "Roscoe" and then three weeks later with our litte girl newf "Pooh Bear". It was a devastating time. A lady from church sent me a poem that she had written for her daughter when she had lost her loving pet.

Our Best Friend

A dog's life never goes unnoticed,
It' etched in your memory and hearts,
The images become more poignant,
When the beloved animal departs.

The many joys he gave you,
The many leaps, and best of all
The tug of war to release, then throw,
His favorite toy or ball.

His eyes so knowing, listening-
His head cocked to one side,
The wagging uplifted paw,
All swelled your heart with pride.

Always hungry - patient though,
He knew you wouldn't forget,
'Cause love is the main ingredient
In your life with your pet.

People get diseases-
Animals do, too
Suffering you can't abide,
You did what you had to do.

This "leaving" one another
Is never easy - that is true,
Happy thoughts and memories
Will help to see you thru.

May this poem help you find peace in the days ahead.

My prayers and greatest sympathies are with you Sonny. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help ease your sorrow. When my girl died, it was the worst time in my life. The pain is hard and it's easier to bear with someone.

Sonny,

I am so sorry for your loss. You can be thankful that the Lord made the decision for you. I'll pray for comfort for you during this time.

Sonny,

When our Sadie died, someone emailed me and told me that "when they leave us, they leave the hole a size of a crater". That has stuck with me, because it made so much sense to me.

Everything felt empty when Sadie died. Cora was still with us... and I was rather surprised by the emptiness.

Even though it seems cliche, I can tell you that time will be your friend, and take the hurt away.... and someday, not too far away, you'll be filled with happy throughts instead of grieving thoughts. In the meantime, I'm sure I'm safe in saying, that we'll all be here for you, to help you along....

Hugs...

Annie

Sometimes i believe a dog knows when it's time and he helped you out by going on his own before you had to take him in! Thats loyalty! so sorry for your loss...Hope memories will make you smile again soon.

I'm sorry for your loss. I grieve just thinking about me in that position one day. I just remember the last chapter of "In the Company of Newfs" and Rhoda describing how she had to be there and hold him as he went. It's a wonderful memoir of being there for your baby, letting him go and allowing him to let go of you - in body anyway.
