I took Ella to the vet this week to have her ears checked and they wanted to give her the Lepto vaccine. In the past, I used to just do what the vet said without question, however, I'm really trying to make educated decision for Ella and not overloading her system with unnecessary vaccines. The vet was respectful and courteous when I told them I wanted to a little research and make a decision later. We live in an area that has a lot of raccoons and I just started taking Ella swimming in the Pomton River and the Atlantic Ocean. I do my best to keep her from drinking the water and she does not spend a whole lot of time outside where the raccoons are. Do you guys use this vaccine? From what I understand it's a bacteria and giving the vaccine only lessens the symptoms if they contract it. What scares me is the vet said dogs can get very sick and even die from this and humans can get it as well. It does not seem like there are a lot of side effects from the Lepto vaccine, however, in the last 6 months Ella has gotten 2 rounds of parvo/distemper, rabies, kennel cough and we have been giving her Nextguard and heartworm prevention monthly. Wow, now that I'm writing this I'm realizing how many things we have introduced into her system in such a short timeframe. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
