Laser vs. traditional methods of Spaying

Hi,

I was at the park last weekend, and ran into a couple who opted for laser spay surgery for their 8-month old Airedale Terrier. They raved about it and about how quickly the recovery was since the incision much smaller making the surgery far less invasive compared to more traditional methods. They also mentioned that the size of the incision is a direct function of the size of the dog (which makes sense, I think). Since we are hoping to wait until the 12-months to spay our Bailey, she will be a big girl by then and am thinking that this might make sense.

Just wondering if anyone out there has ever heard of it and has an opinion. It is a fairly new technology from what I've read and have not found many vets in Southern Ontario who are able to perform this.

Any suggestions, thoughts and comments would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Our vet gives a choice, we have always gone for laser. The benefits outweigh the price difference.

I have it as an option for Fergus when he gets his neuter, his vet is certified in laser surgery & I am definitely going with it. Apart from faster healing time, it also is much less painful post surgery and less bleeding during surgery.

The vet said, if I had him neutered young it wouldn't have made much of a difference due to his smaller size and the fact that male castration is a simple surgery. Now that he is much bigger, the extra cost of laser can be substantiated. The vet also recommended it for older dogs too.

Thanks everyone for their feedback. I will definitely be giving this much more consideration.

I've already identified one clinic in Southern Ontario that will do the laser surgery. Does anyone else know of others in the area?

Thanks again everyone!

I'm glad that you asked this question. I will keep it in mind if we get to the point that we need to look at having Cosmo neutered. ;)

I just did this with Sulley's neuter and it was awesome. I also did it with my kitten when I had her spayed last year. Both healed very, very quickly and seemed to have very few problems with pain...Sulley seemed more upset with the boxers I put on him than anything else, but even then within a few days he stopped whimpering about it.

We just had a laser spay and laser surgery for bilateral cherry eye correction on Penelope, one of the newfs available for adoption through our rescue. The procedure results in less bleeding, is faster, causes less pain, and faster healing. We had a traditional spay and cherry eye correction scheduled at our regular vet, but then when the opportunity came to have it done at this clinic, in discussion with our regular vet, we felt it was in Penelope's best interest to go with the more expensive option of laser surgery for cherry eye and spay.

We had this done at
Kingsdale Animal Hospital
2848 King Street East
Kitchener, ON
N2A 1A1

Penny is healing nicely. Her sister Lily who is in another part of the province had traditional spay surgery a few days prior to Penelope's surgery, and is having a much slower recovery.

If given the choice, I would opt for laser surgery for one of my own dogs. The equipment is very expensive ($70,000 I was told) so not many clinics do it, and those who do charge a premium. Hopefully as demand increases for it more vets will offer this service.

My basic understanding is that they 'cut' with a laser vs a scalpel. This means that it cuts and cauterizes all at the same time, reducing bleeding and letting everything heal up faster because it is already part way there in a sense. My vet charges a $60 premium for it which in the grand scheme of things was nothing in the cost of the procedure and if it made it better for my babies, I was all for it. Both have healed very well and very quickly....a few days and they were back to normal. I am a huge fan of it.
