Kitty Litter Box Adventure (with hopefully a happy ending!)

Over the years, my dogs NEVER bothered with the kitty litter box.....

Then came Luci.......

and then Roman.

They BOTH have this 'thing' about getting into the litter box. When Luci got too big to fit her head in the opening of the box, she would take the top off :banghead: So we had to put stuff on top of it, so that she could not get to it. It seemed to get a bit better (not as often) but then Roman arrived, and the process started all over again. Last night I had to chase him out of that area 3 times....not fun!

Soooooo....I went out and got a 33 Gallon Rubbermaid Tub. I cut a hole in the end of it - put the bottom tray of the litter box inside of it - put the top on and VIOLA!!! The dogs CANNOT get to the kitty litter pan!!! and the kitty litter will also not get thrown on the floor anymore....a 2 for 1 !! :groovy:

Now I just have to hope the cats like the idea as well <g>

My Lucy loves kitty cookies. She acts totally casual near the box, like she's not going to go for it (because she knows she's not suppossed to, at least not when I'm looking that is) and then all of a sudden I'll hear crunch, crunch, crunch. I'll say "Get out of the kitty box!" and she'll instantly stop chewing and give me this look like, "What are you talking about? I definitely wasn't in that box." while all the while kitty litter is falling off her nose!

Yep, we finally had to install a kitty door for that room. Great thinking though, that's quite clever! Let us know if the cats are fine with it. I love the idea of containing the 'scatter'

I knew I had to come up with SOMETHING when Roman came over to me last night (while I was getting my 'American Idol' fix) to give me one of his sweet puppy kisses.......and ALL I could smell on his breath was kitty litter!!!!!! Yuck! :shocker:

I will let you know how it goes!

If only that would work here. My Bria is too cunning for that. I have to have my litterboxes in the basement with a bungee cord wrapped around the handle of the basement door and hooked into a hook on the door frame with a brick on the floor allowing the door to be open just enough for the cats to get through. Oh and a chair in front of it. That's the only way to stop Bria from wiggling her body through the opening and going downstairs for a snack (she figured out that bungee cords have give). FYI if they eat the poo they will get serious runs.

haha - and someone else is making money off same idea!

Well - I put the hole on the one end of the box (not the top) so it will have the same look as the regular litter box - yet if the dogs try and put their head thru it (small dogs or puppies) they still could not reach the litter tray that is in the back.

Also - it would not be easy for the dogs to get the top off of it - as it has to be snapped on - yet - easy for us to take off to clean out the box..... so I think it really will do the trick!!!

If I find that this works out well - I will probably have my Dad build me one out of wood - and stain it so that it looks a bit nicer - though it really would not matter as its by our Laundry area. I used a Green colored Tub so it matches the wallpaper

Along the same lines....I have a wooden bench with the liter box inside that was made for me....the box is in far enough that the dogs can't reach it and it's functional for me too.

You can make your own:

LOL, since in our house Kats (CCO's) are unauthorized, this is funny for us. My guys still have their Mk-IV Model 4B Kat-a-plut in the Garage and they say they are ready to use it! LOL...........

That's a great idea - we have ours upstairs in a bedroom (the cat's room) and a baby gate to keep doggies out. It works fine but I'm constantly vaccuming up litter on the carpet. Our last Newf, Baxter LOVED the cat box and we also had a covered one. One night we could hear a terrible racket going on, went to look and there was Baxter with the entire cat box stuck on his head trying to come up the stairs and it was banging off the walls. He must of been pretty traumatized cause he never tried to snack from the box again!!

Ross had a thing for kitty crunchies out of the box for a very short period of time. I put a stop to it real fast! Here the cats rule. ;) So, our boxes are all out in the open, along with the cats food and their water fountain. Now I need to find a way to stop Ross from eating the kitty crunchies that the barn cats leave around yard...not having as much luck with that one!

Anyway...I love your idea!
Someone posted this a while ago...I don't remember who, I wish I could give credit.
This is a converted crate with lattice where the door is. It would be well ventilated. Although your idea is probably much easier on the pocketbook!
