Kind of a Weird Question...

Hi!

In case I haven't talked about it enough, we're getting a puppy! :groovy:

I just scheduled an appointment with the vet for about 5 days after he gets home. One of the things they asked us to bring is a stool sample. So, um...how do I bring it there without it being gross? Is a zip-loc baggie fine? Will it somehow squeeze through and get everywhere? Also, how recent is recent? Like, could I save his stool from the night before?

PS, are there any Game of Thrones fans here? Looking for someone to share my excitement about his registered name with! :)

I always just bring in that morning's doo in a tied off poo bag. There's never been an issue with it.

What's his registered name?

I just pick up in poo bag after they drop, and then stick it in a zip-lock with a name on it. And yes, you have many GOT fans on here!

My vet provides a special poop container for specimens. It looks like a medicine bottle with a small spoon attached to the lid.

Maybe you should check with your vet to see if they have something similar.

For what Brad typed, I know my vet charges the test fee up front to get one of these containers, but I always take a bit in a sandwich bag. I know my vet likes samples with in like 2 hours. Depending on the time of day of a appointment knowing Snuffles bowel habit schedule, I have been known to take it in the day before so it is fresh, and they can have the results at appointment time. Now even though how you collect a sample and deliver it, I am sure it won't gross out the vet staff. If it grosses you out, you may not be ready yet for a puppy. :)

It's not the picking up of the poop that's bad, it's the possibility of having puppy poop smeared inside my purse because I didn't package it appropriately. :)

Dawn, we just got the AKC paperwork email. Registered name is Bearscamp's Sun and Stars. It fit in with the litter's theme, and I personally love the GoT reference!

Just make sure it's as fresh as possible, because there are motile parasites that die with age making it impossible to find them amid all the other junk. It's quite easy to see them when they're swimming around. The container can be anything clean, no need to be sterile. I once got a fecal specimen in a caviar jar which gave me a chuckle.

The big day is this weekend, right? Are you ready for the up every couple hrs for potty trainning? That's probably the only thing I don't miss about puppyhood. I loved all the other shenanigans. Zeke was potty trained in less than a week, while Miss Myra took me over a month. Take it all in, and enjoy every second of it, it'a only around for a little while. As for poo in my pocketbook, that would just put me out, too! hehehehehe

Yay for puppies!

As others have said, just pick up the sample in a poop bag and tie it off. I usually then put it inside another bag or ziplock just in case. it's totally fine. But I don't put it in my purse....I just carry it :whistling:

(Now I have a mobile vet who picks it up, so sometimes it gets left in the mailbox...haha...)

Our vet wants it fresh, not from the night before. So if your appt is early and you don't know if he'll go before it, just take one in the day before. It's usually fine with the vet.

Thank you so much! Pickup day is Sunday the 9th. We had to push it back a week because of scheduling issues with this weekend. :( But they passed their heart checks today!

So, fresher is better, double bagged, don't put it in the purse. Got it!

And, yes! I am MORE than ready for weeks of interrupted sleep! Months, even! I've been waiting for him so long, I think I'd put up with anything if he'd just GET here already!

I've been saving up empty pill bottles for just that reason. I found it easy to scoop up some poo in the bottle and the lid is nice and tight.

Congratulations on the new puppy! Can't wait for the puppy pics. :)

The puppy's mother came from that litter, so your dog would be my puppy's uncle, I think?

Yes, he's from Bearscamp. So everyone knows I'm not endorsing the kennel or anything, all puppies are spoken for.

It's hard because they passed all their heart checks and are ready to go to their homes, but because of scheduling and my daughter being school age, we won't have him for another 10 days or so. :( But I will be sure to post many pictures when we finally get to bring him home!

Bring it on !!! Lots of pics please.. Just no belly or pink tongue shots.. Some of us are weak and have heart problems that can be exacerbated putting us at risk... Thank you in advance for your consideration..

Others of us don't care and will take our chances, we want the belly shots and the pink tongue shots, so we can remember the smells of puppy fur and puppy breath. BTW, I always put stool samples in ziplock bags and the in a brown paper lunch bag with the dog's name printed on it so it doesn't get mixed up with somebody elses.

You are in for such a treat! I had the pleasure of spending part of my birthday in the pen with the litter. What a happy and beautiful bunch of pups. Can't wait to see pics of yours as he grows. :)
