Kids and Cars = trouble!

First let me start by saying we have really really good kids. 4 to be exact. That is mainly due to their mother! If they were more like me, I could not say what I just said.

Well even good kids will be kids ans last night our 17 yr old Matt (the one who broke his leg last summer. Leg is doing ok - not fully recovered but ok) took our car to pick up a friend and go to the mall. On the way they got to talking and missed the exit for the mall. We live in the Chicago burbs and the road they were on leads you directly into the city. They could see the sky line 15 or 20 miles in the distance and decided to go downtown. Now thats the story any way, not sure I believe it!

So.. without telling us they go to the city, park the car and go to what ever store they were headed to. When they came out (According to the story) the friend decides to go see his mom at work and get a ride back home from her. So Matt heads back to the car.

When he gets there...the car is GONE! Now I am sure that in itself is quite an odd feeling but he knew right then he was in big trouble! :) So he looks around, makes sure he is at the right intersection, and calls his friend who lives in downtown. Now this is an adult friend, Danny. One we know and is a great person. So Danny comes to his rescue and not long after that I get a call from Matt on Danny's cell phone.

I answer "Hey Danny whats up?" Umm Dad, this is Matt." and he starts telling me the story. Mind you this is my 17 yr old son who, within 3 weeks f getting his drivers license totaled his first car, an old clunker I gave him. Then a few weeks later gets a speeding ticket, pays it out of his pocket and doesn't tell me about it! Then a few weeks later gets 2 more tickets! Now Capt Ted can correct me but I think it's kind of like 3 strikes your out - or at least you loose your license! Well we went to court, paid the tickets - he had to go to drivers school again etc etc.

So as he is telling me how he missed the mall exit I stopped him and said "Did you crash the car or not?" No he says. "Did you hit anything or anyone hit you?" No. Whew.... ok so what happened...

To make a long story short (Like this is short!) the car got towed because he parked in a Snow Tow zone! So Danny locates the car, pays the $160.00 to get it out and we got the car back. Matt if feeling pretty stupid after all that and he owes me another $160.00!

Kids.....

In defence of Matt and Lord knows I do not defend kids with cars... But I to was towed not so long ago, Ok so i didn't see the Trolley Tracks i was parked on.. sue me! All this because I thought i was doing something nice for Trond and letting the poor guy sleep in while I the ever dutiful wife did the food shopping at a green grocer who happens to have the best veggies in Oslo and is located in the worst neighborhood.. so there i am with bags of veg no car and every creep in Oslo walking around. I too called Trond only he was sleeping and didn't hear the phone. I had to take a cab back home.. when i got home he was up and i said... I got good news and bad news.. The good news is i got the veggies.. the bad news is.. The car was towed. cost.. $509.00 for towing.. $90.00 for ticket for blocking the trolley...total cost $599.00 And if we didn't pick up the car on the same day.. another $50 is added per day. Matt you got away cheap! LOL.. I had to endure the shame for a long time.. till Trond parked in the wrong place 2x and got towed twice.. LOL Trond wins!

I am so glad Matt and the car are OK because this kind of situation can present worrisome moments in the extreme! I remember the days, too!! I am with Nasus about defending the car "problems" teens (mine) sometimes have/had. . . I didn't - I got mad and punitive. None the less, we lived in the country and basically, they had to drive sometimes. However, I myself have also been soooooo close to being towed several times, and at least two of them have been in crummy weather. Actually, one time the car was hooked up to the tow truck and somehow I was able to talk them out of it - this usually doesn't work for me! I do feel your pain - even if it's a memory - and I know there are grandchildren ahead for me someday. Oh well, I'm sure they will be perfect!! :D

He could make some cash and shovel my drive and sidewalk and deck, and deck stairs. Might help pay you the $160. Since it's still snowing out, he will become physically fit, and I won't have to do it. :uglyhammer:

And...................As a bonus, Ricky (AKA Mr. Smooch) will get a work out smooching someone new.:lol:

LOL - If you were a little closer! My boys get off easy with snow - we have a long driveway like about 800 feet (244 meters for our Canidian friends or 2.5 football fields long) so it has to be plowed! We do have side walks that need to be done today

Considering it was downtown Chicago I say he's lucky it got towed and not something else ;-).

I hate driving in downtown Chicago and do not plan on EVER EVER EVER repeating the experience.
