Journey will not load - Update

Journey is afraid of the car and will not load. Our training has progressed from feeding her in the garage to feeding her next to the car and now (ta da) with the back door open. In a couple of weeks I'll move her bowl into the car. Ultimately she will be fed in the car for several more weeks before I turn on the ignition. We're making progress!

And your first few trips should be to a park or McDonalds or something, not an (eek!) vet! :)

This makes me proud of you. It takes a great deal of patience, love and understanding to help a dog work through a fear. Awesome job!

Well, thought I was the only one with this problem!! A friend suggested I start feeding Frankie in the car. I didn't take all the steps you did - didn't think of it. For about a week Frankie would struggle at the end of the leash as I led him to the car with the hatch up & his dish already there. I had to show him about putting his paws up once he was willing to approach the car. Over the weekend, he started jumping in. This morning the hatch was up as I had unloaded some dog food. When I took Frankie out for his morning whiz, he raced to the car & jumped in without his breakfast dish even being there. I was so pleased for him. He's my new boy & hasn't been out & about much.

Nsmarlis, that's wonderful!!! I sure hope we get there soon :)

Our mystery is that Journey USED to ride in the car with no problems. Something changed and I don't know what. So with some help of some wonderful NN'ers (via e-mail) we are starting from square one and hoping that this will take us to success. My other two love the car and have never exhibited any problems. Eating with the back door open was huge, but when I moved her dish up to the same level as the floor of the car she was very tentative and backed away at first. Then I guess hunger took over fear and she came to her dish and ate. We'll leave it like this for a couple of weeks. Cross your paws!

Paws crossed. I think my boy was traumatized by his 3 day trip here. Long hours in the car with strange people. As I said, he hadn't been out & about much. After we first got here, it was several weeks before he would even walk close to the car. I did start by leaving the rear door open when I came home from grocery shopping or had a load of dog food. I'd walk him around on the leash & he would approach the open door & smell. I'm not really one to give advice but is Journey afraid of the jump in, or the car itself?? It it's the jump, then maybe a ramp?? You've probably already determined this; sorry if I'm covering old ground. I was just so pleased that someone else had this issue as it was new to me. Most of my dogs have thought they should drive the car!!!

I missed the background story. How old? Was she a rescue, or have you always had her?

Our Maggie liked the car, then suddenly didn't. She would balk, cry, lie down, whatever, but she didn't want to get in.

I felt SO bad when we realized the problem was pain. She has horrible hips. As a pup, she liked the car, but as she grew (and her problems got worse) she came to associate the pain in her hips with the car...until she really hated the car.

Once we figured that out, we devised a way for her to step up into the car, rather than try to hop in, and combined that with her favorite treat (Vienna sausages). After that, no more trouble with her loading up.

Well, Journey loved my old Sable station wagon (or if not loved it, certainly was willing to hop in for an outing). Then we got the SUV, she didn't like the height but would get in. Then one day she changed her mind and absolutely, positively, no way no how. I got a ramp. She won't get on that (but Zeus and Star use it all the time now). I tried the ramp from the back which is fairly steep. I tried from the side and she doesn't give a rat's a** and won't walk on it. We tried leaving the ramp on the ground flat and she will step on it if she has to but prefers to walk around it. Bottom line, she just won't load. I do not know what changed her mind about the car so can't exactly address that particular fear or issue. So we're starting from the beginning and hoping we can overcome whatever made her upset. Pain doesn't appear to be an issue since she runs and plays otherwise, she has no stiffness going up and down stairs and seems generally healthy. She is a timid little girl who requires encouragement to try new things but once she understands she is happy, happy, happy. So, that's the story. One day she loaded one day she didn't. Wish I could explain it better but I don't really understand it myself. Everyone's help has been so welcome and appreciated. We are trying to make the car the place where all things good happen and where the yummy food comes from.

Almost forgot, she's 5 1/2 yrs old and we've had her since she was 3 yrs. She lived in many places because she was shown and then there were many breeding attempts which involved shipping (?) her to many parts of the country. She was unable to get pregnant and finally was placed with us. Also a side note, we have her mother whose one and only litter produced Journey. She couldn't carry to term after that litter and was placed with us. Then a couple of years later we got a call from rescue saying, "Star's daughter needs a home do you want her?" Oh yeah! All three dogs were adults when they came to us.
