On New Years Day, I drove to Dubuque, IA to meet a young woman who rescued Fiona. I had read about her on one of the FB newfie groups. I was missing Anya and questioned if I was ready for another dog in my life. For all of the road blocks I put up, they were easily dismissed and knocked down. Since bringing Fiona home, we have been out for walks and even Eden Anne has taken an interest in life outside of the house again.
Fiona's background as I understand it: She was probably breeding since her first heat. Fiona is now four years old. Back in the fall, the young woman who rescued her heard of newfie puppies for sale on CL at three days old (yes, days). She contacted animal control and entered a home that was condemned. She took possession of the puppies and Fiona. Fiona had been eating canned corn and beans. This young woman let Fiona raise her puppies and she found homes for them at a proper age (one is still there as that pup will be moving to Florida). In the meantime, she trained Fiona on the basic, important, commands and housetraining.
Fiona has fit in nicely. She has a calm temperament but very playful as you will see by the pics below. The first few days we stuck close to home getting used to each other. Yesterday (Saturday) we met the "Newfie Brigade" at the dog park. I was concerned Fiona and I had not bonded yet and what her recall would be like. I couldn't have been more pleased. Fiona came to me when called but happily chased with the other newfs.
Fiona is tiny...I've had goldens bigger than she is. I debated about getting another golden or another newf. Fiona is the best of both breeds.
Here are some pics...the first one is of me and Fiona
Here are members of the newfie brigade: up front is Eden Anne followed by Mrs. Big Dogs (Glory) with her Bentley and Belle, Fiona picking on Meadow and Antsin at the end. Oh, and some little dog entering the park amidst this madness.
And here we have Fiona and Meadow with, I believe, is Antsin's butt.
