Introducing a kitten *gasp* to our pack...

We have decided that although we are not ready to add another newfie to our pack, we would like to add a kitten to our pack. Any ideas on the best way to accomplish this so that no one gets hurt???

Just as a reminder, we have three newfs 1 6 yr old female and two boys ages 6 and 5. I am nervous about our 5 yr old Zacc who gets very excited.

It depends on the individual dog, how they react, but I would say definitely don't let them gang up! It seems like a lot of dogs can be fine on their own, but with the pack mentality they will do things they wouldn't by themselves (like chase and torment a kitten). If you can keep them calm for the initial introduction, not let them gang up on the kitten, and give the kitty its own room/place to go you will hopefully be fine. Its also good to give the kitty lots of high places to jump up on that the dogs can't reach. They like to perch :)

Eeee!! Kitty!! I hope there will be pics!!
I've always had such patient pooches that everything always went smoothly when a newbie would arrive.
Just make sure the kitten has a safe place to be away from the dogs and that all interactions are closely supervised. It's so easy for one of our big dogs to step on and accidentally injure an itty bitty kitty.

Just some of my fave kitten/dog pics...

I'll stop with the pics/vids! I have awesome dogs! :)

Good luck with the newbie and congrats!!

Oh my word, those pictures are so sweet. Now I want a kitten! Not that Gilly would ever lie still for even a moment if a kitten was around...

Awwwwwwwwww becky, those pictures are just too sweet. Where is the milk bar???? :)

Introduse slowly and like someone said, maybe one at the time. Do you maybe have a kitty crate and can allow the kitten to be in the room with everyone and still be safe? Often if they do not run and everyone can get used to it that works.

I got mine used to a rat that way, even though they hunt rats/mice in the barn. From having the rat in the cage with us and us talking to it and being nice to it, they just accepted it as ours ( just looking after it for friends)

Good Luck! Our Henry was very patient with cats. Mason still chases the cat after a year. It's most annoying because the cat would really like him if he would just not chase him! I love kitties so good choice! Can't wait to see pictures!

When we brought Zeus into the house Bear our newfie mix was 9 years old and Zeus was 7 when we adopted him. I put Zeus in a bathroom for a few days letting him get use to me and then I took the towel he was laying on to let Bear sniff. After about two days, I then took him into the bathroom that was to be his room in the main living area and let Bear get use to his scent for another two days. After all this I would then put Bear up and let Zeus explore the house on his own during this time. After a meet and greet, where I held Zeus and my husband held Bear we were pretty good.
