In, out, in, out, in, out....

Now that the weather is cold, our newf always wants to be outside. Fine. The problem is, he doesn't like to be out there by himself so he is constantly wanting to outside, then come back in, then go outside, then come back in  If we don't let him out, he will stand there and bark at us until we let him out. Then when he wants to come back inside, he stands at the door barking to come back inside. Then 30 minutes later, back out, then back in, then back out. GRRRRRRR. Anyone else's newf do this???? A doggie door is out of the question since we have french doors, not to mention the fact that I wouldn't be comfortable having a doggie door that big so that anyone could just crawl into our house!

During the summer, he hates to go outside and will even hold himself for up to 12 hours! Sometimes we have to push him out the door so that he will go to the bathroom!

Laughing with you, not at you.

Sounds like my house...except Neptune can actually open the door himself (but has never mastered the art of closing the door).....he stands half in/half out with that "Hey, anyone wanna' come outside with me?" face that he does so well. Gotta' love 'em!

Happens here too except Kimber loves the winter and our newf mix Moose loves the summer. One of them always wants to be out and the other one has to be forced to go.

Toby will stand at the slider looking in, barking and scratching at the door. So i'll open the door to let him in and as soon as the door opens, he looks at me then backs up. As if to say, "c'mon out mom"... He'll do this a couple times till he figures out that i'm not coming out. Then he'll finally come inside. 15 minutes later, he's barking to go out and the whole thing starts all over again..

Oh yeah, except it's not thirty minutes, it's thirty seconds. Nanook has NEVER gotten the hang of doing anything by himself - he won't even leave the door if it's been six hours since his last potty trip unless someone comes out with him.

and after we boot him out alone twice the third time he'll ring his bells until we open the door, and then back up, and refuse to go outside until someone else goes out first!!!!

Bull will stay outside for as long as he can, unless it is raining then it is in and out. Skylar goes out and sits at the back door waiting to come back in no matter what the weather is. And of course as soon as Skylar comes in Bull wants to come in in case she is getting something he isn't. Then he wants to go back out..... I think more than a doggie door, I can use a revolving door!

Yes this definitely sounds familiar. I'm with Nessa though, every 30 minutes would seem like a luxurious amount of time. With our gang though usually 1 goes out, then a few minutes later one or both of the other ones wants out and the other wants back in. This is continuously repeated. I even have a shirt that reads: Plan for the day: Let Newf in, let Newf out, let Newf in, let Newf out....etc.

Ours are the same way...well let me rephrase...Murphy always wants out and never wants in if it is cold out..if it is hot out he doesn't want out and will try his hardest to stay in..to the tune of holding his pee for 12 hours until mommy forces him out...Bella wants out...wants in...wants out...wants in...she wants out now because Murphy is out there and he can't possibly be allowed to sniff anything on his own....oh but then she'll see mommy inside doing something in the kitchen and she'll want in to try and get some food...oh but wait mommy wont' give me food...uh oh better get back out and supervise Murphy lest I miss some big find in the backyard...and on and on and on.

Murphy is very polite and will patiently sit at the door to be let in or out when we notice him...no barking, whining, scratching...just waiting until Mom or Dad realizes he wants in or out. Bella has no manners. She wants out when she wants out and she will howl and scratch and whine until you get your butt to that door....same thing when she wants in.

Gotta love them.

Sounds like my house but you have to get five to have the real effect. One wants out so they all have to go. The one goes potty, then another wants in so they all come in. Then another decides to go out so they all have to go. At times they all be lying outside peacefully until we open the fridge then they all have to come in.

When I was a kid, my mom solved that problem with Murphy by adding a room on the house that she had heated. Then she had Murphy hitched to the run so he could come and go as he pleased.. (the heat was not on at that point) As he spent the first year as a kennel dog, he preferred to be outside than in....

Luckily these guys have all grown up as inside dogs, so they only want to go out if we do... or to go for a ride...

Lucky me I have to go outside everytime Caesar goes out because he'll start digging up the sod, digging holes, eating grass and rocks. Thank god for puppies!!! At least he's polite about needing to go out, he sits quietly at the door until I'm ready.

HB..has none of the problems..sprawls in great ..Queen of all I survey..posture..on my outside porch. During the 4 nights I had her inside during our coldest period..she sprawled on her sheeted area, snored like a recruit in a barracks,,and the last morning..woke me gently..asking to go out..in the softest of wuffles.

AH Ina, how I love the wuffles! Nanook gives them every time we leave him in the car to go shopping. As soon as we get back into the car he wuffles us both all over our heads to make sure we're still us, and didn't get body-snatched while buying groceries. Once he's established our identities, he gives us a few licks to fix our hair, and then lies back down!

Ha! Yep...sounds familiar. I blame myself for that though....because when he was a puppy I went out with him everytime he went out. After he pottied....the lead would come off and we'd play!

I refuse to do the in-out thing now though. If I KNOW he has done ALL of his business....he stays in once he comes in.

He does trick me sometimes though....he'll stand at the door looking in....which means he's ready, right? Nope...soon as I open the door he grabs his big blue ball which just happens to be hidden neatly behind a step....and he bolts into the yard and looks back at me! Ha! Ok...HOW can I resist that?
:D

Something that I think is hilarious....if Robin and I are in seperate rooms doing things....he'll often position himself in the hallway....midway between us! If we're together or just one of us are here....he's at your feet the entire time.

Only five? That would be heaven!!

We have the one has to go out...they ALL have to go out, but then, oops one wants to come in...so ALL have to come in. Oh oh...somebody forgot to go potty. So out they all go again.

I have mopped the kitchen floor no less than 20 times today. And, Addie is now barking to come in.

I am GETTING a doggie door in spring, I don't care what it costs or what it takes. Every morning before work and every evening from the minute I get home until bedtime is a constant flurry of "I want out I want in He is out so I want back out Now can I come in I am cold (Scooter) I am bored inside and it's hot (Ben) I hate these young pups let me out (Morgan) Oh Morgan is out we want out (Ben and Scooter) Mom, Ben is picking on me (Scooter) so I want in Mom if Scooter is in then I want in Food food food is there food inside?" and so on.

Does anyone know if you can put a dog door on a sliding glass door? I plan to get one that I can drop a metal plate through and lock it when I want to close up for the night. If I have to invent one, I will.

I will never finish my schoolwork like this.

Hi Terri,

Try Hale Pet Doors - Panel Door

Their "giant door" has an opening of 15.5" x 27.5" and has a "pet shoulder height" of 25-31". Elliott (37") is squeezing through our current dog door (different style) which has a shoulder height of 30" (opening is 14" x 23.5"), so I suspect your Ben could hunker down and fit through the Hale Panel door. I'm considering purchasing this door for my pack, their heights range from 26-37".
