If You Had to Choose

I've had six Newfs, two Saints, three Wolfhounds, and one Dane. The Wolfhounds are most like Newfs in temperament - sweet, gentle, sensitive, devoted souls. The Saints are funny, affectionate, "Peter Pan puppies" that never seem to grow up. The Dane was comical (exactly like Marmaduke), but his sharper temperament and stubbornness were not a good match for our family. I love all the breeds, but it is the "sweetness" of Newfs and Wolfhounds that I both need and want.

If I were a different type of owner/handler, I would get a Neapolitan Mastiff. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I know I am not a good match for the breed's temperament or needs, so I will admire them from afar.

I loved my little Annie she was a beagle/gsd mix so smart and loving, would like to rescue another some day. Have also rescued labs, boston terriers and Bailey my newfie mix. I would also love a wolfhound there is one is rescue now I keep looking at :) also a dane. Basset hounds and doberman too have always loved the doberman after watching a Disney movie in school.

Actually any pup that needs to be rescued I would be open too.

For me it would be a greyhound. I spent so many hours pouring over sites that take in former racers, but at that time I was in a condo that wouldn't allow it. Maybe if I don't end up with a newf, that would probably be my "fallback" when the time comes.

After a Newf it's hard imagine another breed but the grooming is demanding. Might consider a non-American GSD. Don't like the permanent show pose being bred into them domestically. On the other hand, we're less than one year away from empty nesterdom and the duties that accompany any dog force tough choices. Who knows, Lewis and Token may be my first and last dogs as an adult. They're quite an act to follow too!
