How to teach "Leave It"

Enlist the aid, willing or otherwise, of one tom cat, allow dog to stick his Newf nose into the face of reclining, hissing cat, while saying "Leave it!" Cue cat to hiss more and Newf nose to reach even further into cat's space, at which point cat spats and smacks. If the human is quick enough, "Leave it!" at smack-down time becomes quite the appropriate marker.

The instructor is available for additional lessons, should the need arise.

Magnum learned after one time; Thor, however, required the lesson twice. Barking at said cat made no difference in the outcome.

ps - the boys are fine - not a mark on them; hopefully, no homework required.

I love it! Why didn't I ever think of that?? With six cats in the house, the dogs learned not to bother the kitties...but I never thought to combine the "leave it" with the smack down. Brilliant!

You can also see in that photo that Neo (the irish spotted cat as I call him!) is less than pleased. :)

So funny! Lulu tried to teach Steely that way and it didn't work. Steely quickly realized that Lulu has no front claws and when she slaps her head, it's more like she's petting her than anything else. So, basically Lulu rewards Steely for getting up in her bidness.

But of course - but I think the instructor works best when he's guarding his daddy's chair! :icon_bb:

I would like to schedule an appointment, please. We have a teenage Newf who needs a refresher regarding "leave it" and I feel this instructor would teach it, for once and for all.

Magnum got another lesson just yesterday - he's getting leggy enough that he can stretch his neck and reach to the table top - one of Neo's favorite perches ..... I think Neo is enjoying his instructor role just a tad too much!
