I heard that it was REALLY rainy in the Chicagoland area and I know there was a water test. I am really curious how it went, who got titles and how the terrible weather affected the event!
I hope Gigi and Kathy did well and Myrtle and Basie.
Let me know!!!!

water test

Just curious...Where do you train your dogs to get prepared for water events? Do you start independently or are there group training classes?

Where do you live. If you are fortunate enough to live in northern Illinois, there are alot of great peolple who will help and if you are in east/central wisc there is good support there too. I know that there are people ALLL over the US who work weekly on this....just not me. Sure wish I could but unfortunately, I am too far away from anyone to help me. Hope that is not the case for you.

How was the weekend? It was "just ducky" and I'd say it went swimmingly!!! :goofy: :icon_lamer:

I packed 5 changes of clothes for Steve and I, our barn boots, and tons of towels for dogs & humans. We used them all!!

Kudos to our judges/stewards/test committee/entrants who were really good sports about the weather!

Also kudos to Cissy Sullivan who made the mad morning dash for the donuts when it was realized that no one had brought them! Double kudos to Cissy when she noticed there was an escaped Newf who was heading for the busy road! She hopped in her vehicle and went tearing off after it, and got in the nick of time! You rock lady! :icon_bb:

Kayla and Justin with little Neko (new nners, and soon to be new club members) got to experience their first water test and see just how committed (and crazy) Newf owners can be! Dare I say they are now hooked?

Our own cmdrted was the auctioneer and he did a great job, actually I believe thanks to his wife Judy, he bought quite a bit of the auction items, maybe today he's wishing he hadn't been quite so effective??

At least one other NNer has a brag from the weekend, but that's her story to tell!

As for Gigi, I'd love to say we came away with a wd, but we didn't. We were VERY CLOSE though, she only failed take a line which I knew would be the problem. On the positive side, we DID pass swim with handler! Thanks again to everyone's wonderful advice!

Our Senior judge Ron Horn had some great training advice for me which I plan to implement this week. Hopefully, I will have a brag after South Central's test next weekend.

To Jess 644393: Where are you located? If you are in the NE/IL - NE/WI area, there are 3 formal training groups. PM me, and I can give you more details. There are folks on the list from all over the country training. More than likely there's a group not too far from you.

To Becky: You can do a lot of training right at your own home on land. But hey..you're not that far from us! Why don't you come out a few weekends next season? Cherilyn and I can show you a lot, and you can practice at home on land.

Signing off for now, back to unloading the motorhome and doing LOTS of wet laundry!!!

Kathy (finally warm and dry) Gigi (yippee!!! I get to do it again next weekend!) :allg069:

Water training

I actually do live in Norther Illinois..Chicago. I don't even have a dog yet, but I'm looking into getting one this fall and thinking about what sort of activities I could do with him. I have started looking at drafting and water sports. It seems so interesting. I will have to find out more info when the dog comes. It looks like a lot of fun. I suppose if you own a newf, the water activities are just a plus. I will have to check back later.

PM me when you get your puppy and want to check out water practice. We're in Antioch on Sunday mornings, and sometimes Friday evenings. Also, out in Harvard on Monday mornings and Wednesday afternoons. All sessions are seasonal and weather dependant.
