Dogger I could focus on the birdhouse with a zoom lens and make everything sharp too. I chose for the house to be sharp and the trees to be out of focus - but how?
Be careful with your terms too. While I did use a zoom lens (70-200 IS f/2.8L), the fact that it zooms has nothing to do with the effect. (hint there)
Ok I'll take a stab and you will see how camera stupid I am. In another thread you said you can put your finger over the lense when you are zooming to make the background blur. Is that what you did??
You focused on the birdhouse and set your aperture (which is the size of the lens opening) to a low f-stop (2.8) to give you the shallow depth of field. A pocket camera doesn't give you the option to change your shutter speed or aperture, so everything in a picture would come out clear - unless you moved the camera....
Elly May has got it! There's one last thing though in order to make that shot I needed a fast aperture and something else (which has already sort have been said)...
Jeanie - almost - I said you could put your finger in front of the lens and it would be so out of focus that you wouldn't see it.
i get this on auto action or on the portrait setting
i cheat.
i have been getting some incredibly clear detailed shots of geese in action, on auto action setting, not sure it is preferred to do manual for those shots, but some say they use several settings when they go shoot something.
