How cold is too cold to be outside?

Serious question here... how cold is too cold for a Newf?

This morning it is -29C (that is -20F) and just opening the door burns my face as the cold rushes inside.

I have three Newfs:

Noah, my biggest and youngest, should be called Prince Newfie who'd prefer to spend his days on a cushion in the front room surrounded by the cats (his court jesters). He does NOT like going outside.

Gabriel, my oldest likes to go out and sniff around but then is very ready to come back inside once his business and patrolling of the grounds perimeter are taken care of (all of which takes MAYBE 5 minutes tops)

Paige, my female will stay outside on the deck all day if allowed. She loves being outside...or maybe just likes the quiet away from her brothers.

This morning, though, I refuse to play the in and out game. It is bitter outside. Truly bitter. And yes, I'm fully aware of Newfs history and endurance of the cold but our dogs are quite domesticated.

So again my question, "How cold is too cold to be left outside for long periods of time?"

I allow them to be out as long as they WANT to be out. Mine know when they are cold..and they come back in. But don't be surprised if they are quite happy to tolerate it MUCH longer than you would.

If she's not shivering and you let her in when she wants I would think she is fine. Clifford will stay out for long periods in that cold too. As soon as he comes to the door I let him in, but it's not long before he wants out again.

I have the same problem with my newf it's the
Same temperature here and he just goes out and lays down in it but I am worried it is far to cold
Is this safe

Chance is happy in this weather, for sure. She bounces around waiting for me to open the door to let her out and won't come in unless I call her (and shake the treat jar!). In the summer, I nearly have to drag her out of the house for a walk, and she is at the door in 30 seconds asking to come in if I am successful in getting her out into the yard. Guess I would be the same way if I was wearing a double thick fur coat all year round.

Well, It was -30C when Tiika and I and a friend set out on our walk this morning. We walked for 50minutes and Tiika was just fine. So were we! I didn't groom outside this morning after our walk, though. But yesterday, I had Tiika's sister as well and we were out for 2 hours including grooming time. It was only -25C yesterday morning though. If we're not walking, Tiika doesn't stay out very long in the garden unless she has Splash to play with.

Joan, you are much tougher than I. I just am not enduring this -30 degree temperatures at all. Only my Paige enjoys laying about on the deck outside. The boys do their business and play briefly but prefer to be indoors. I suppose as others have said, if she is not shivering, then Paige is probably ok while she's out. As for me, it just isn't in my internal makings to be walking about in -30 or even yesterday's "balmy" -25.

You and me both. I get hives if I get too cold and I can't get warmed up for ever. Maggie has been amusing herself with a frozen rope toy outside. I think her constant in and out the door is taking place of her walkies!

It was minus 22 F at our house and Gracie will go out and lay in it...but when she's had enough, she whacks the back door with her paw and I let her right in. I think they are pretty good at deciding when it's too cold. Angus used to break the ice on a nearby stream and lie down in it.

Sophie hasn't found a temperature that is too cold yet. I think about -25F is as low as we've seen since we got her. Like others, she'll just go outside and lie down or romp in the snow exactly the way she does when its +20 degrees. She lets us know when she wants back in.

-35 here and Matilda had a nice nap in a snow bank; Zoe demanded to be let right in after her business was taken care of; Marin munched on some snow then wandered back in; Neptune had a brief lay down and headed back in; Finnabair stood at the door on two paws and cried; Floyd refused to go out.

Yep! Sounds like my crew. Just all over the map. My back door is a swinging door...which doesn't help my lack of comfort dealing with the cold either! Oy vey!

Mine is acclimatized to very cold weather, even though he is just a pup still. We are outside quite a lot. I think that is the key word - acclimatized. I'm pretty sure he'd do fine outside 24/7 like a wild animal in anything the weather can throw at him. His fur coat has gotten insanely thick the past few weeks as the temperatures been dipping!
