hot spots!! arrggghhhh!!!

Hi all, haven't been using the forum much lately but I am in need of help. Quinn, now age 15 mos. has hot spots. He's been to the vet and we have tried just about every "cure" known to man. Most are hard and dry and he leaves them alone and they are all over his body. Head, neck, back, back end. He has one though that he will not leave alone. He's living grain free and has oral salmon oil on his meals. He's on the nzymes regimine, we've tried extra virgin coconut oil, the domboro the vet gave us, diluted apple cider vinegar, gold bond and every combination of the above. He licks the spot immediately..or as soon as he is out of my sight. It doesn't appear infected, it just won't crust over. Another spot near it is already growing back fur(we had it shaved at the vet).

We did just borrow an inflatible collar so maybe that will help..though I am not sure how much to use that...all day and all night until the hot spot heals?

Also, why? why does he keep having this problem? He's on flea and tick treatment, but the vet thinks it's an allergy to the bites. I did find a tick on him that had eaten, but was dead. This, after Advantix.

I'm soooo frustrated and feel bad for my itchy boy.

Anyone have any other ideas for us?

Thanks,
Beth

What food is he eating? Grain free is a good start, but it could also be that he is reacting/allergic to the protein he is eating (our Lucy is highly reactive to beef). It could also be something environmental. Where does he spend most of his time when he is lying around. What do you clean that area with? He could be reacting to the cleaner, or something in the cleaner. You see? It could be ANYthing. Try to get your cleaning products dye/scent free. If he has eaten the same food for a long time and is getting hot spots on it, switch to a food with a different protein source, to see if there is any improvement. We went to a food with single source carbohydrate/single source protein for Lucy. (Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish). Recently, she decided she'd had enough of that and stopped eating. I bought a bag of the NB Sweet Potato and Chicken, and she is eating well again, with no allergic issues (so far).

One thing we do when Lucy has hot spots...bathe her in a chlorhexiderm shampoo (4% strength), then follow up with chlorhexiderm flush directly on and around the hotspots on a daily basis. This seems to kill the germs and take away a lot of the itch. I've never shaved an area, either. I just keep it clean and "flushed" til it heals.

He's on Oma's raw food mix. He get's beef w/veggie mix and chicken w/veggie mix. He also eats turkey necks and chicken frames and beef marrow bones.

He spends most of his time on hardwood floors finding cool spots. Though we do have a rug in the living room that he spends a bit of time on too. I mostly just vacuum it and don't use cleaners on it.

How did you discover the beef allergy?

Where do you find that shampoo and flush?

Thanks!!!

Sounds like flea bite allergy. If you found one, there were tons more you didn't see. The only thing that has worked here on fleas is Comfortis. If you've more than one animal, all need to be treated. I even bombed the house and never saw a flea anywhere inside. Thanks to Kelly, I now have Neo Predef powder in my arsenal to treat hotspots. Often, it's the only thing that will work. Hope this helps.

I have used neo predil...but folks...there is NOTHING better than Nu-vet....stinks like sulfer, but I have never seen anything like it for hot spots...google it for a supplier....also....do you get your pup bone dry when you bathe him ? That can definitely cause a fungus.

Also...Newfs can be allergic to chicken liver..any thing with a 'chicken base' has liver in it...might check that out.

where do you find neo predef?

yeah, the vet thinks flea bite allergy too. All the animals are treated. We saw a tick on quinn, not a flea. But apparently even with treatment they can still bite the animals and he's reactive to the bite.

Have been trying the inflatible e collar...he can get to his bites with it on. arrrgggh!!

One of mine is allergic to Chicken. He kept getting a yucky ear. It wouldn't go away so when I took him off chicken it is sparkling...... With other dogs I have had we had allergy issue's as well. I will write when I get home from work...... Also sometimes they are so inflammed there body needs time to detox before a major improvement is seen....

It's a Pfizer product which has been around for years. My vet carries it. If you go online, you'll need a script. One of the main active ingredients helps to calm the itching and pain. That should keep him from licking. You're lucky the hotspot hasn't become huge. One of my girls had a H S from hell. She figured out a way to actually break the plastic e-collar to get to it. She also ran a high fever and went off her food. This is the only thing that worked. I sure hope it helps your boy.

Mine had been on several flea products and Comfortis was the only thing that killed the fleas. For some reason, many I've spoken to have had the same problem with normally effective products doing nothing. BTW, I only saw one flea on my Landseer. Had it not been for the white, I NEVER would have seen them nor suspected fleas as causing the itching or hot spots.

it's about the size of a large egg...only round. I'm going to call the vet today and see if she carries it.

It's just a powder that you put on the spots?

Yes a small bottle of powder. If your vet doesn't carry it, maybe another nearby does. If not, ask for a script and buy it online. It's about $25. I buy 2 bottles at a time, but I have 10 dogs!

I have to say I was in the same boat as Ginny. Lola's fever was 104, she lost 10 pounds. It was the hotspot from hell. It just would not heal even though it was shaved and she wore a collar so she couldn't touch it. The Neo-Predef cleared it up fast when nothing else would.

Thank You Ginny, but I can't take the credit. Erika (crazy Newf /Pyr lady, yup Erika, talking about you lol) turned me on to it. I am so happy it helped your girl Ginny :) It's scary when they won't eat and are sick

I ordered the neo predef online last night...the doctors foster site. Can't wait for it to arrive. Thanks all for your advice and insights!
