Just wanted to say hi to everyone and introduce myself. My name is Jennifer. My husband is Ian and we have two college aged daughters. Nearly 6 weeks ago we brought two newfie babies into our home. Ella is nearly 4 months old now - a black newfie with some white markings. Remy is 3.5 months old and a male landseer. They have captured our hearts completely.
We also have two older (11 years this month) mixed breed (lab, border collie and chow) littermates we adopted from a rescue shelter when they were 4 months old. Eli and Lily have been such a huge light in our lives. In January we found out Lily has incurable nasal cancer. To say we were devastated would be an understatement. We were given the option of treatment that would only give her maybe an additional 2-3 months of life past the expected 2-3 months she was given. She would have to undergo both radiation and chemo which would make her really sick. We decided to not put her through that for not much more life and a very low quality of life. She is still with us. The tumor is growing, she is slowing down but we are so grateful for every day we have her.
Her brother and littermate Eli is also experiencing some health issues that we are investigating. It is so hard to watch them go through this, but having our two new babies brings joy into our household when we would have nothing much but sorrow without them.
We decided to get newfies because we have always been so drawn to them. The size doesn't intimidate us. The expense - well kids are expensive - right? The one and only thing I hesitated about at all was the drool issue. However after falling completely and totally in love with them - I can laugh about being "slime-d".
We don't know anyone else in our circle of friends with giant breed dogs. One of the partners at the vet we go to has 2 irish wolfhounds and he gives us great advice. However - I wanted some place I could go and share our new found love for our...newfoundlands!
I may have lots of questions and need lots of advice as they grow so I hope you are ready for that. Really looking forward to getting to know you and getting to read all about your newfie's as well.
