Help with whining

So, my lovely 100 something Thor is a BIG WHINE BUTT. :darn: I've tried not paying attention or walking away, but this does not stop the whining. I have also tried telling him hush, making a loud noise, and just about anything I can think what. This dog will whine the WHOLE time in a car! What blows our minds is the fact he LOVES a car ride, but the minute we stop or slow down he starts to whine. He whines if we keep him out of the room we are in. I'm starting to go insane when it happens. Is there anything I can try to do that I'm not doing? Believe me, ignoring him does not stop the whine. Once, after his morning potty break/breakfast, we locked him out of the room so we could get some more sleep and this dog whined for 2 hours off and on. Also, he did not need anything, believe me. Help? Please......

Turner was like this. With the car we talked to him in a soothing voice and he stopped eventually now he lays down like he's trying to glue himself to the car so he's not happy but tolerates it. He also used to whine at night to be let out when we know he can hold it and it took a solid night of ignoring him to get him to stop. He literally whined on and off the entire night. He now knows it doesn't get him anywhere and will be fine if we crate him and are doing things in other parts of the house. Tough love was our route and it worked magnificiently however I was not a happy camper the night he whined the entire time.

Yeah, the day he whined for two hours, we never let him in and waited till he stopped whining to open the door to leave. He just does not do well if not being in the same room as us at all. I can handle this most of the time, but it's the whining in the car that drives me insane because it's right behind my ear. We have tried the calm voice and even that doesn't help. It's to the point that I don't want to take him anywhere because of the whining, but we still take him. My husband can block it out, but my ADD does not allow that to happen. I just don't understand why he would whine the whole trip, even if the car was moving he would whine. *sigh*

Ignore him. Don't talk to him, don't even look at him because eye contact is communication. It will take a while to break this habit as it does to break any habit.

Remember talking to him in a calm voice is positive reinforcement so in reality you are telling him that is the behavior you want.

Sadly enough...we have this issue with our lab. He is 11...we have tried everything, including several dog behaviorists. He would whine and screech at the top of his lungs in the car for hours on end. Even with our newf next to him for company. He wasnt in pain or scared, just overly excited. The only thing that works...we had to block all windows so he couldn't look out and give him a sedative (2hrs before we leave the house).

Not sure this is much help to you....since you have the issue at the house, too.

Thanks guys! I love that guy so much, but I'm not planning on taking him to Texas again in Jan because I don't want to hear him whine off and on for 14 hours. uhg
