Hi everyone=-) My family will be getting our first newf in March (litter is due early Jan). I know that is still a little ways away but as much research as I have done, I knew a forum of newf owners was the best place to get all of the little details I'll need. I'll tell you guys a bit about myself (I tend to get long winded, so it will probably be more than you want to know)

I have wanted a newf for years and years. We live in Florida, so we have waited because of the climate here. Our plan had always been to head up to the mountains when my husband retires (he's in the Navy) and we would get a newf then. However, life doesn't always work out to the best of plans and it looks as though we will be staying here. I have literally thought about this for 3 years and finally decided that we can make it work. I know there are many other newf owners in Florida and it can be done - so we're on our way to making that happen and I couldn't be more excited!

My husband and I have 2 human kids, our son is 9 and our daughter is 6. Our other family members are a husky/gs/something-else-that-gives-him-floppy-ears mix who is 1 and a 1/2 and 3 cats:D

I had to laugh - I was reading a few threads in here and someone mentioned that the average puppy does $1000 in dmg...I'm pretty sure Jedi surpassed that in his first month here! At this point, I don't think I own any more nice shoes for a newf to destroy! :goofy: (not to mention that the furniture has already been chewed, the carpet is a disaster, and my daughter has stopped crying when yet another of her stuffed animals that she left on the floor is found in poofs of stuffing) Jedi has certainly calmed down a bit, but at 1 and a half - he is still mostly puppy and we do still sometimes have issues, but he is very good with the "leave it" command now, lol. (and all of this destruction is with plenty of daily exercise and attention - I am home all day!) So...bring it on newf puppy! - on a side note, Jedi is an AWESOME dog. I don't want to make him sound bad! He is a big loveable (working on well trained) oaf - he just likes to chew=-))

I have a question for you guys that may sound silly, but this has been bothering me greatly as I start to make my list of things I'll need for puppy arrival....crates. Jedi is crate trained and LOVES his crate. The crate helps with SO MUCH and I am a firm believer in crate training....however.....Jedi doesn't sleep with us. He can if he wants, but he doesn't. He may climb in bed for a few minutes and snuggle, but then he gets down and sleeps in his crate (it is in our bedroom). My problem is that we LOVE big furry things to snuggle with! I don't know how we would have gotten through potty training with Jedi initially without the crate, and I love that he is perfectly happy in there if I need to go to the grocery store or something (that whole chew thing....yeah) but we want big furry things to snuggle with. Any recommendations on how to crate train but at the same time have the puppy sleep with us or am I just going to totally confuse the poor guy?

as I said....long winded. I'm happy to have found this forum and look forward to "meeting" all of you!

Welcome from Washington state:) I'm definitely not one of the experts here;) but, I found with my two that Charlie would get on the bed for a short time and then it got too warm him. Max never got on the bed, only the couches.

Crate train him first and then if he happens to be a snuggler in bed, he will do it on his own. Don't forget that Newfies tend to get hot quickly, so like your husky mix, it may be for just a short while, then he'll be off to the cooler areas.

That being said, many Newfies love to lounge on the sofa with you or lean up against you. Between the two dogs, you'll get your snuggle time somewhere.

Have fun with you're pup! And ask as many questions as you can think of.

Thank you! I think the bed may get too hot for Jedi too - which means it would surely get too hot for a newf. My rational brain understands this, but the other 95% of my brain wants a big furry snuggle bug! I should be thankful Jedi sleeps in his crate, the picture below about sums up our "snuggle" time when he is on the bed! Thinking about it, I suppose I should have worded my question differently....it took Jedi almost a year to know that it was ok to climb in bed with us. Maybe it is because we have a high bed (steps/ramp is on my list for the newf puppy) but he seemed nervous whenever we put him in bed with us so we didn't push it. I'd like to be able to put the new puppy in bed with us initially so he isn't scared. We didn't do this with Jedi because I wanted to make sure he was comfortable in his crate. I'm worried that my use of the crate at bedtime instead of snuggling with us first made it so he didn't think he was allowed up there. I'm ok with the new puppy wanting to sleep-sleep in his crate, but I'd like him to know that bedtime snuggling while watching tv is the best!

so.......I just answered my own question. I guess it took writing it out! I'll just bring him up with me for a little bit then put him in his crate - easy enough!

here's the pic - always cracks me up. I don't know who put it up originally or where it came from, was just something on msn

Welcome! Glad to have you!

Don't worry about getting enough snuggle time. As I'm writing this, I have a 16 lb Maine Coon cat sitting on my lap, and a 120 lb Newfie on the couch with us, head on my knee. My Maggie is a cuddle bug, but she does get too warm and won't sit on the couch in the summer. We made the decision early on not to let her in bed with us as we have a queen size bed and 2 adults + and adult sized dog would not work out.

However, we do allow her on the couch (obviously) but only when invited. This has worked well. We kept her off of it for the first 2-3 months and then started allowing her on it, only when her blanket is there. She figured it out. It works because we can get our snuggles but she doesn't try (too often) to sit on our house guests!

Welcome and congrats on the new addition!

Our newf will snuggle on the couch or bed for short periods only. What I tend to do when I want to snuggle is curl up next to him when he's lying on the floor. My husband makes fun of me, but that's OK. I love to snuggle :)

Hehe, sleep on a refrigerated/frozen slab or in a puddle of cool water, and you may stand a chance to get the pup to sleep with you. :) Sorry! Snuffles is not a cuddly dog at all. Even if I lay next to him on the floor, it isn't long before he moves. I think like most here. you will find that your pup will I bet like cooler hard surfaces like ceramic tile or even concrete to sack out on. And if there is a water bowl to splash the water out off, that is even better to a pup. Snuffles will go in his crate to sleep too, but there is no bedding at all. Again, he likes the cooler hard tray. Good luck on the litter and new pup to be.

Welcome!!! We also have a queen size bed with a cat already in it. Plus our bed is pretty high and we are afraid she'd fall out and get hurt. Have fun with the puppy!

Welcome! :)
No advice re the bed snuggles as our bedroom is upstairs which is off limits for Raleigh. However, I can assure you that you'll get plenty of cuddles throughout the day with a newf around!

Thank you everyone for the welcomes :)

Jedi also sleeps in his crate with nothing in there. We went through 3 doggie beds inside until we realized he really just wanted the cool floor that was there. And we do have cats that share the bed as well, so I do have fluffies to snuggle with. I will just have to wait and see what happens and get my newf snuggles as I can! :allg069: ...I just have to find the patience to wait for them:darn:

Welcome from Newf Jersey! Both of ours love their crate and they look for tile. No sleeping in bed - their choice.(

Thanks! Since we live in FL, I'm sure ours will end up on the tile too. This is ok. When my husband wakes up in the morning and finds me asleep on my kitchen floor with the dog, it will just be something else he jots into the "my wife is totally crazy" category lol

now if I can just figure out how to get a profile pic in here. I don't have a newf yet, so my cats posing will have to do ...
