Hi everyone,

My Newfy, River, lives in North Carolina. He is king of the castle, protector of all and our big lover boy.

He is addicted to water! He has learned to sniff the water to tell if it's salt water or fresh water. He knows salt water will make his tummy hurt if he drinks it. He LOVES to swim.

He also loves his big sister, Miss Caroline ( Great Pyrenees). We laugh when we read all the comments about a Newfy hair. Newfs have no hair compared to a Great Pyr. We are often asked if our dogs shed and I always say no ( hahaha).

I look forward to exploring this site more, as River has major skin problems. Any suggestions on where to start reading would be great. Vet says it's allergies.

Have a newf good night!

Welcome to the forum, from Newf Jersey! My girl Myra has allergies and we are in year #4 and this year have begun our journey into raw feeding and it has made our situation much more controlable compared to other years. I think there is a sticky on raw feeding which can be helpful. River looks beautiful and the good thing is he knows the difference between salt and fresh water cause my boy Zeke does not and always pays for it. Use the search button at the top of the forum and I'm sure you will find a wealth of information :)

Welcome! Oh my! River is absolutely gorgeous. More pictures please! Hope you find some answers to his skin problems - no real help to offer other than we limit any snacks other than food and dog biscuits made by the same company to avoid food allergies. So hard to track those allergies down!

Welcome from Newf Hampshire!

Don't hesitate to do raw, but please have balance in his diet. Please make sure you do your homework on this.

My late Dexter had terrible food allergies. He was on raw and many supplements, no kibble, no vacs, etc. He lived to be over 12 1/2 yo.

Hi, welcome, we are in NC (Charlotte), where are you? Are you member of SENC? We have a lot of fun activities, like the parade this weekend in Black Mountain and Spring Fling in May. Come play! www.senewfs.org :)

Hi and welcome from upstate NY. My Berner had serious allergies, which were seriously aggravated by what she ate. She could not eat salmon, chicken or most grains. I had her on a venison sweet potato diet that alleviated a lot of her issues. I have started adding turmeric to all my dogs evening meals and they love it. It has a lot of beneficial properties. Good luck.

Welcome from Washington state :) My late Max had more allergies than I'll list here. We had him tested for food and environmental allergies, and gave him shots once a month (his environmental allergies were so numerous). He also couldn't eat most commercial foods. I managed to find a couple salmon and sweet potato foods he was alright with.

Welcome! My Elvis has bad food allergies and was on and off medication for the first year of his life before we started changing his diet. Our vet at the time told us the 4 most common food allergies are beef, corn, wheat, and chicken so we switched him to a lamb and rice food that doesn't have those things in it and he's been fine ever since!

What kind of skin issues is he having? Elvis suffered from red, weepy sores on his belly and ear infections, which we were told are two of the most common signs of food allergies.

Rivers meds

We can't get him off of steroids long engough for testing. He is on Atopica which is the best allergy meds you can give. We have been able to dramatically reduce his dosage of steroids (Temaral P) though so that's great. He also has a bad staph infection as a result of scratching. So he is also on antibiotics. He is the dog version of "The a Bubble Boy"
