Hello, from a newfie owner wannabe

Hi All!

I just wanted to say a quick hi since I've been lurking since I discovered NN and don't feel right about reading everything and not saying a quick hello.

I don't have a newf, but will be hopefully getting one in about.. 5 years. I know, way down the line, but there are many factors at play (including our dog that would not do well in a multi-dog house, and we want to add another 2 legged member first.. I don't want 2 under 2...no matter how many legs they have!).

I've read all the stickies and am prepared to do a crazy amount of homework when it is closer to time.

Happy to have you on board. Lots here to read and get familiar with. So glad you are doing your homework! You'll be a better Newf parent for it and you'll be better prepared for what will be one of the wildest rides of your life. LOL

Chime in whenever you feel like it, ask any questions you like and visit often!

Hope to hear about your new additions (2 and 4 legged) in the near future.

Thanks guys :)

I am waiting to do the brunt of the work with choosing a breeder and such.. no point in scoping one out only to find that they are no longer breeding when we get to that point. But until then, I'm looking at how to handle one - physically (ie. training), but also with grooming, etc. I've always had non-shedding breeds, so this will be the biggest challenge for me.

Hi and welcome!
If you aren't used to shedding fur be prepared for lots and lots of grooming and dog hair everywhere imaginable!
Lots of information in the various Stickys here and ask questions.
Choosing a breeder Sticky is well worth reading.

Thank you :)

And yes, I've heard the horrors of fur and drool.. so I'm well prepared. Or so I think - I probably won't have a clue until I live it, right? :)

Welcome!
My house cleaner just quit because of the hair everywhere (and no, it isn't that bad). Good riddance. Dog loving cleaners start Monday. Hope they work out well. They just fawned over Obi.

That's a riot! Did s/he think s/he should only "clean" clean houses? I mean, that's the point of hiring a cleaning service...isn't it? Maybe Newf hair was starting to show up in the cleaner's own butter dish.

LOL, I could never have a housecleaner.. I'd be too embarrassed at the state of my house.. LOL (I have a 2 year old...need I say more?). Cat hair, I'm used to..so mixed with dog hair.... it will be fun ;)

mcme - currently we have a 5yo wheaten terrier. However, he is fearful/reactive .. so he's a handful. With a ton of work, we can now pass people when walking and he won't try to bite their face off (as long as they're not in his space for too long), we can pass bikes (which was a huge trigger) without more than just a glance, and motorbikes no longer send him into hysterics. ;)

I am seriously hoping my next dog will be a bit more...stable.

Even though you do not plan to get a newf for 5 years, if I were you I'd start attending functions of your local newf club. Get involved. Let them get to know you. It will be much easier to locate a breeder if you know them. Plus a breeder will feel more comfortable placing a pup with you and may do so over some other buyer. Some breeders have a 2-3 year waiting list.

Thank you Jeannie, I will look into that!! I hadn't thought of a breeder bypassing to go to someone they know, but I can definitely understand it.

Without being a participant in events, how would you suggest introducing myself into the community? Seems like it could potentially be awkward :)

There is a breeder here on the west coast that will only sell puppies to people that are return buyers. If you haven't bought a puppy from them in the past, you cannot even get on their waiting list.

Oh wow, that's crazy. How can one become a return buyer if you haven't had one to begin with...

I get that they would want their pups to go to someone who knows the breed well, but that makes it harder for people getting into the breed!

Something for me to consider when searching for a breeder. Thank you :)

There are many things you can do. Volunteer at their events. If they have a show, draft test or water test, be there to help. No experience necessary, they will tell you what to do.

Just go and tell them you look to own a newf 5 years in the future and you want to learn about them. They will be more than happy to mentor you.

Contact Alberta Newfoundland Fanciers, they also have a FB site. The club puts on Draft tests and you should see several of the Newf people at the various dog shows around Calgary.
