Hard time moving kennel

From the very first night we brought Thor home he has always slept in our room in his kennel, unless we leave him out for the night and even then it's in our doorway if not in the kennel. We have a extra guest room beside our bedroom where my husband is wanting to move Thor's kennel. I've been putting off moving his kennel out of our room with lots of excuses to the hubs. I worry about not hearing him whine if he needs to go out in the middle of the night and worry about him adjusting to the new room. Everytime I bring this up my husband looks at me like I'm insane, but this is how I feel. I just don't want to let go of having Thor in the room with us. I find comfort in the fact that he sleeps with us and I can take care of him if he needs something.

I also feel like a mother with a human baby at times. lol Am I over reacting? Is this normal? OR am I just a crazy dog lady? :goofy:

We moved Turner and Willows crates out of our room and into our office and it has been a great success! Also if Thor is ANYTHING like our two then you will have no problem hearing him whine.

it's normal level of over reaction :) if it makes you feel better, set up a baby monitor. I suspect you'll hear him if he's just down the hall anyway, but the monitor might make you feel better. I would think that for the sake of your hubby's sanity I'd try to find a way to move him out of the bedroom.

If you're a crazy dog lady, that makes 2 of us! Buddy sleeps with me every night - most nights under the covers and we're back to back. :) Until a year ago, Bailey too would sleep in bed with me - curled behind my legs. Bailey can't climb stairs anymore so I have a bed at the bottom of the stairs. Scuba & Diver absolutely love their crates, BUT they want to be with someone. They would not be happy if their crates were moved out of the bedroom. (we do have an additional crate in the family room) Until bedtime, Scuba will sleep there while Diver sleeps in front of the sliding doors. Now that I've babbled, I'm sure if you do move Thor, you will hear him. He will adapt. It's us crazy dog ladies that have the harder time. I understand how you feel. ~Amy~

LOL! Ok, confession time. The other bedroom...is right across from our bedroom door. I could open our door and see into the other bedroom. ROFL! I don't think Thor being in the bedroom bothers my husband. What does bother him is the huge kennel. lol

I'm attached! Thor even sleeps in the room I'm in. I'm upstairs in our office now and he is sleeping on the floor in here. We just lub each other. lol

I would think you are right, he will sleep wherever he wants to sleep. My guy usually sleeps in my room, or out in the hall outside of my room. He always has. Id consider moving the kennel to the other room and keeping things open, even if that means gating off his access to the rest of the house (I did that for a long time). You may find that he doesn't need a 'bedtime' kennel at all.

The only reason we still kennel him at night is because he thinks we need to go out at 2am or 4am for some reason. So, during the week it's kennel time and on weekends we leave him out.

You can get a baby monitor. Ours have always been downstairs in the kitchen. As puppies or if we have a newbie, I just hook up the monitor at night until they get good and settled. Now, they just bark if they have a problem. You can hear that "I need you" WOOF anywhere in the house.

Tell you what, at least you don't have a 2.5 year old toddler sleeping in the bed with you and your hubby sleeping in the guest room! Tell your hubs that it COULD be worse :D

haha yes, it could be worse! I just don't see the need to move it. Yes, the kennel is HUGE and does take up some room, but I make use of it by putting random items on it (light stuff). When we get another dog in a few years or have children, then I agree it needs to move.

When I got sick of the kennel I moved it out..and Obie stayed. I can't remember how old he was.. maybe 3-4 months? No problems.

Yep, I would just move the kennel out to the other room and leave all doors open and let him decide where he wants to sleep. You could put a gate up to keep him upstairs with you.

My husband never wanted the dogs upstairs but he finally let them. I will never sleep without them up by me again. In Chance's last year, when he developed heart problems, I slept on the couch in the living room with him and my husband was upstairs in our room. I'm the crazy dog lady too, who couldn't just leave him alone down there when he had gotten used to sleeping by me.

Lol we are the opposite, my hubby is desperate for the dog to sleep in bed, none of the 3 dogs we have ever had together would sleep in the bed with us ??????? Lol. When I was a girl my little border terrier slept with me every night, I used to sneak up with him when everyone had gone to sleep Hee Hee. I agree. It is much easier a dog on your floor that a 4 and a 5 year old sneaking in, which has been happening to us since Xmas lol.
Move the kennel and them Thor will decide where he wants to be, I remember moving ,y son into the room opposite us, it's not nice at 1st but u do get used to it,I promise, you can always lift your head up in the night to peek in on him xxx

We keep a blanket over Snuffles kennel in the living room to make like a cave/den effect. We haven't locked Snuffles in it for some time, but he goes in and sleeps. Now with the blanket over the top, it is now a place to collect *stuff* kind of like a table. See it can be a piece of furniture for your husband to put all is valuable junk on.

My Newfs sleep in our room...but my husband is an over the road truck driver and is only home on the weekend so he usually doesn't put up too much of a fuss!!!
I agree, put the kennel in the other bedroom and just leave the door open...your husband should be happy that he sleeps in a kennel and not in your bed like mine do!!! Three Newfs-1 queen size bed!

We keep a blanket over the kennel as well. If I'm watching TV or something, I don't want him thinking it's not bedtime. Thor goes into his kennel a lot to chill or sleep, so I just don't want to move it yet. Thor will not sleep on the bed, but the runt will get up there for about 5 mins (long enough to wake us) and then hop down! grr. lol

Our kennel is also our tv stand in the living room. It has a piece of plywood on top, a tablecloth and the tv. Only the finest in home furnishings here. It is also the coldest place in the house year round as it is right next to the very badly insulated fireplace with uninsulated heatalator. Martha thinks it is heaven in there.

LOL! I love the fact that I'm not the only one that uses our kennel to store stuff. Our room is normally the coolest in the house. *shrug* IF the hubs brings up moving the kennel again then I'll think of doing so.
