I groom 4 and we all enjoy it. i groom some part of a dog or two everyday.I used to show, but not at prsent. I do keep mine tidy and knot free....grooming is a us time and the dogs are great at "table" and love to be blasted by the dryer. It gets a bit busy on the table when 2 or 3 get on there to be blasted. We have a good solid table and nice sound steps to get on the table and also in the waist high bath on the verandah...i just have to make sure that is I really seriously want to grrom I lock the other three out and work one at the time. My first ear trim was awful, but i got better and better. And now I can trim and it looks good straight away. Remember, unless you are showing a bad trim just grows away again...........I bought all the good quality stuff, Clippers, dryer and hubby made the steps, table and put the bath in with hot and cold taps........And I think I have saved myself a fortune and also it is just a good bonding time for you and your dog/s

WOW!!!!!!! Sorry you went through that. Several years ago, our regional club had Penny Schubert do a hands-on seminar on Grooming a Newf that we attended. I thought at the time it was pricey, but over the years it's been well worth it. Four Newfs at a groomer is price enought. Now I do it with the better half's assistance. The only dog that regularly goes to the Groomer is Tigger. Her handler also grooms. She has won many Grooming contests across the US. She also is very reasonable, since we groom her every three weeks to keep her coat in shape, she charges $60.00 a session. A decent price for a bath, brush and groom. I really don't get why the prices on the east coast are what they are.

Dawn; I usually pay $80 for bath & groom, we have 2 places in our area; 1 on Bridge Ave. in PP and 1 on Mantoloking road in Brick, I always confirm the price & what I will agree to pay BEFORE, & I will complain & make them redoor dry if not done properly; always give tip; Most of the time I do Tiki myself (have trimmers, shears, brushes, etc., only have to get a dryer, maybe that is why he looks like **** most of the time, but he is a happy beach/construction type foreman dog, aka brat). If I hear whining from the groomer, depends on the day, but they will get an ear full from me. For the most part, I try to get all the tangles out of him before his appointment, & I do light trimming (My dog grooming service is cakked "Mike do Butcher). Just to let you know, my cousin from Manchester whose mom lives down the street from you, his wife has a mobile grooming service, they just got a newf puppy, is a year old, brown, & over 180# already.

I believe that the groomer really didn't want to say No to the grooming but also didn't want to do it. With that said the easiest way around that problem is charge a ridiculous amount of money and the customer never returns OR if they do return the groomer makes a ridiculous amount of money and doesn't care! Win Win...
This is Not my first large dog nor is it my first groomer and the pricing in my area have always been close except this time, she obviously has a money making business and feels she can be picky.

Side Note: Roo was not in anyway bad shape, my wife brushes him regularly.

But You have to admit he does look Good!!!

Thanks all

I called 4 local places (accept petsmart cause I saw them shaving a newf or two) they all asked similar questions, Age, any ortho issues and weight and have they been groomed before. I answered the same for all of them, Zeke was 3, no issues, never groomed other than me & 175lb and Myra 2, the same but weight 140 lb. I went to Hungry Puppy and spoke with the owners wife, (former groomer and newf owner) she explained that they could do the smaller dogs in no time and they would make twice as much. Personally, I think they'd be right to charge $200 cause Zeke is like 2 dogs with his hair. Even when we went to the self serve out on 37, she told me the same (cause she also did grooming) and when I went there the two times I did, I had to schedule a day ahead cause she knew I'd be using her big tub most of the day. Tell your cousin, it's easy to put the weight on but really hard to get it off. And when Mike da Butcher needs a dryer pop by!

ps. sorry for taking over your thread and your right he sure is handsome!

Dawn, when I go to the self serve in Brielle, on rt 71 they don't give me a time limit when I wash/rinse/dry Tiki; I can't do it yet because of the shoulder issue, but I have been thinning him out for his next groom. He is starting to smell like bait (clam digging on beach).

I bought myself a grooming tub, dryer, and grooming table so I do my own guys.

To help make some extra cash, I've been grooming dogs (help pay off the cost of the equipment). I had someone ask me to groom their newfie and I told them $50 so long as the dog isn't horribly matted. I don't fully brush out matts on my dogs if they are bad. One will let me, the other will flip out, so they get trimmed out on her.

$50 seems low, but I do nothing otherwise and I always hated paying $50 to get my newf PUPS groomed, so I figured I'd make some people very happy :)

I've had so many people inquire and have done three dogs so far, two more tomorrow morning, and I'm happy to help. I'm not a licensed groomer or anything, and I give full disclosure beforehand, but they seem to be happy to get a clean dog, albeit sometimes a bit damp around the head (I don't have a crate dryer here). But at less than 50% what the groomer charges, I wish someone would groom my newfs for $50.

Maybe you can find someone near you who just is looking for a bit of extra cash?
