Am I the furthest away?

Hello, I'm Glen. I'm 25, I live in the UK and I've been on a Newfie research kick for a while. Sadly I don't think my Newfoundland dreams will ever be realized, because I may be emigrating to :kgo_027:phoenix:kgo_027: and subjecting a Newfie to such hardships seems criminal.

Makes me sad but I am in a long distance relationship, the government has our papers and we're 5 months into our wait. Not sure if we will remain in Phoenix permanently but we will for a while, which will put a damper (er.. scorcher?) on my desire to have a Newfoundland.

I'm not a particularly interesting chap, I love reptiles which some find offputting, but I'm not one of those tattooed up ear gauge wearing guys who thinks reptiles make me alternative. No offense if you have tattoos or gauges! There's just a blight on the hobby that is people thinking reptiles make them edgy and cool.

So yeah, I registered here not realizing the majority would be Americans, makes sense I suppose, so I doubt my odds of finding anyone close with a Newfie to dote on are very high. Looking forward to talking to you guys and girls. :)

Hi to you from across even further, Australia..........Welcome to NN

There are a few UK people on here, I am sure they will reveal themselves soon :)

I live in a very hot climate and my dogs do fine here in Summer. We just have lots of fans and water for them to be able to get wet. Phoenix is dry heat, which dogs cope with a lot better, as long as they have shade...humidity is often what really gets to dogs in general. I have never had a problem with my dogs over-heating and I do not have aircon. Just large verandah's (screened), huge fans, ponds and lots of shade. So you could still have a newfie :). I find my dogs have adjusted their Summer coats too and I do a belly clip, so that they can feel the cool tiles

Hi! Is it a reasonable enough idea though? Looking into certain dogs in certain climates, the consensus seemed to be that there are ways to help them cope, but I just figured it was better to not give it a dilemma to have to cope with in the first place.

Does sound more feesible since aircon is standard in Phoenix, but man the first time I felt that summer sun in Phoenix. I found it comparable to when you're cooking something in the oven and you open the door to turn it around/flip it over, that initial blast, it's like that constantly haha.

I adapted to it much better than I thought I would. I love the cold myself, can't do with being warm. Been a bit of a whiner this week because it was randomly getting up to 10 Celsius and above, thinking what's going on? It's January. But there's a cold snap on the way apparently so I'm looking forward to that.

Hi there! I live in Florida and we will be getting our first newf in about 2 months :groovy:. I went back and forth for years about the heat here and if it was a bad idea for the dog but after speaking with newf owners and breeders here we finally decided that it can be done! We happen to have a lifestyle that is accommodating to a newf in hot weather (I pretend I'm a vampire and don't go outside in the heat anyway so no reason a dog would have to). In Phoenix, you'll have ac! If you can handle very early morning and late evening walks outside of the heat of the day and the dog will be inside in the ac, with lots of water, he'll be ok!

You can always take winter vacations to a cold climate with snow so the dog can play in its element a bit too!

The lovely thing about newfs is that they have a temperament where you can keep them inside for most of the day and they'll be ok. We also have a husky/gs mix - try entertaining a dog with that energy level inside of the house on a daily basis - oh the stories we have!:roflmao:

Welcome from Newf Jersey! It can get pretty hot and humid here in the summer months. We crank the AC and they look for the tile. :)

Hi,Glen, Welcome from New England as well. You're very wise to consider the heat, but those who live in hot climates can give you a better idea whether it's really feasible. On the other hand, there shouldn't be a shortage of reptiles in AZ. LOL

Maybe after you're stateside for awhile you may relocate to a cooler spot too. I'm sure you'll hear from some of our UK friends.

Yeah, that was the plan. I wouldn't get one here and then take it to Phoenix, I just wasn't sure if it was a good idea to look into it in Phoenix over all.

Ahh it seems registering here was a good idea! I don't think I would've considered it otherwise but now it seems like something seriously worth looking into. :D

Yeah haha, reptiles everywhere. I have the eye for it! Every time we're hiking I spot stuff. Though some of it is not very well hidden, like this Chuckwalla on the side of a mountain, right on the trail.

Hi Glen....I live in Wisconsin. I have a brother who lives in Phoenix. Glad you are giving some thought to having a newf in AZ. I've considered moving there when the snow flies and it is bitterly cold here. While the newfs love that, I don't! But, hopefully someone who lives in such a climate can chime in with some advice for you.
