Gracie has a swollen and bloody nose...HELP!

Gracie has developed this weird swollen/bloody spot on the top of her nose. We took her to our vet and she's stumped. Have you ever seen anything like this? It's nasty looking and continues to weep a little blood. She hasn't been bitten by anything or eaten anything strange that we know of. We don't have any posinious plants or poisions anywhere where she could get into it. We're really freaked out.
Our vet put her on a combination steroid/anti-inflmmatory drug and antihistamine. Plus, a topical antiseptic medication.

After looking online for a couple of hours I'm wondering it she was bitten by a tick and it's lymes desiese.

Any ideas would help.

Vin (the boyfriend) just walked by and asked what's that....I said don't think anyone knows. He mentioned it looks like a spider bite, he's thinking recluse but I don't think that is that common out there....here's a link I just pulled up http://www.highway60.com/mark/brs/bite.asp?Msg=2446

but I don't think you mention any other symptoms. Doesn't look like any tick bite I've ever seen. Myra had Lymes and never had anything like that. Maybe others have some ideas, cause I'm not sure what I think.

Poor baby! Looks awful but I wold have to say a bite of some sort?
My hubby says Gold Bond but I don't agree with him.
Good luck and hope things get better soon!
Keep us up and let us know if you find the culprit!

We do have Brown Recluse here, but I would think our vet would know what that kind of bite would look like.

On Facebook a friend asked if we put Frontline on her. We did on Sunday or Monday. She said her dog had a reaction that looked a lot like Gracie's nose.

Ask the vet for a biopsy and skin scrapings to be done........It could be neoplastic or the skin scrapings might show something. Don't just leave it. Early action for neoplastic things is often better. there are a multitude of skin cancers it could be. Or it could be just reactive.
Thinking of Gracie, poor sweetheart

Our vet did look at it under a microscope and it's not fungal, but there was a lot of bacteria. so i guess it could just be a bacterial infection

Oh...that looks sore. I have no idea and sure hope you find out. Sounds like your vet is right on top of things. Sending lots of healing thoughts for your Gracie.

Pemphigus? Our O'Malley kitty just had something similar on his chin. Vet thought it was either a bad case of kitty acne, or pemphigus.
Pemphigus is an autoimmune issue, and can have bacterial infections as secondary problems. Usually treated with steroids and antibiotics.

Here are a couple of links I found on the subject, in doing a quick search:

This next link has photos...and it does look similar:

I agree with Ronnie..if it doesn't resolve fairly quickly with therapy, I'd go to biopsies. I don't think it's pemphigus because that's the only spot it's in, and in the couple of pemphigus dogs I've seen it was much more extensive than that. It could just be an abrasion that has gotten infected, but if thats the case, it should resolve quickly if you can keep her from rubbing it and you have her on antibiotics. An abrasion in that area will swell quite a bit, and the skin is tender enough there to break fairly easily too.

Still could be pemphigus, as it starts out in one area, then spreads. Hopefully, it isn't! I'd rather be wrong on this, but it's still worth mentioning to your vet, to let her weigh in.

Apparently it's really painful because she will barely let me touch it and she's not rubbing it or scratching it at all. It still looks very angry!

What's weird is that it came on REALLY quick. I let her out yesterday at 3:30am and her nose was swollen, but not raw with oozing blood. When my wife let her out at 7:30am it looked like the pictures.

By the way, a couple days earlier one side of her face swelled up like she tried to eat a bee, we gave her benadryl and it went away. So when I saw the swelling on her nose I figured it was a little left over swelling from that.

My Husky recently had an irritation in the same spot, not that bad but looked simlilar, maybe just an earlier stage. After cleaning it with a soap that kills bacteria and fungal, (an anti microbial), it went away quickly. With your new cleaning solution, this should clear up and dry out fast, if not he will need oral antibiotics for sure. I would not put any creams or ointments on it, it needs to breathe. Please update us soon, I hope the best for you guys. -Michelle

Here's our update. She's doing much better. Her nose is healing and we think it was an allergic reaction to Frontline. Weird.

Wow. Scary if it is Frontline that caused it. Well...scary no matter what caused it...just glad she is doing better!
