Ghosts of the Forest

This video (and legend) is filmed not too far from where I live. The 'ghosts' are beautiful and the video is interesting. And although I've seen a ghost or two, I've never actually seen them in the wild, they are stunning.

Thanks for posting! We used to vacation not far from Boulder Junction (Minocqua/St Germain). Will have to go to Boulder Junction next time and keep our eyes peeled for the ghosts. Hopefully, next time will be next summer!

Oh my gosh, Marikay! When my kids were home, we used to vacation in the Minocqua-St Germain area, too. Our paths could have crossed! We still go 'up North' every summer, especially to have the all you can eat breakfast at Paul Bunyans!

I am going to go to Boulder Junction this summer to see the ghosts in person. :)

LOL, it's definitely a small newf world! One time we were at a small zoo on the outskirts of Minocqua (the one that's a little to the west as my faulty memory remembers) and right outside the gift shop was a landseer. I think it belonged to someone who worked there because it seemed like he settled himself into his spot. But it was such a delight seeing another newf.

My Up North sweatshirt is worn out so it's time to get another. I'm such a tourist, LOL!

Paul Bunyuns - YUM!

A friend that I sent this link to returned the favor by sending me pictures of a black fawn taken around Beamsville, ON. As soon as I can I'll try and upload them and post- unless Wayne can do it first- pretty please I'm horrible at the picture business! She said they are even more rare than the white ones.

Emmie Lou, I found the photos online. I did some reading and found that they are even more rare than the albinistic deer. They are called melanistic. :)

It is a beautiful deer!

Awesome, Janice! That is one of the things that I read about the melanistic deer.... they have been spotted in Ontario, Texas and Maine and you have albinos, too.

I did some checking around locally, people tell me that if I travel up to Boulder Junction and talk to the locals, that I would get some tips on where to spot the ghosts.

Edit: Marikay, the small wildlife zoo was probably Warbonnet. They are closed now :( but Pecks is still open and that's where I saw my first albino deer and the piebald deer that Jane mentions.

There used to be some farms that produced albino deer about 2 hrs. from here. I used to love to go see them.

I have never seen the blacks before... aren't genetics cool?

It does make one wonder thought... in the terms of genetics.... I would suppose that both would be considered as a recessive gene..brown would be dominant.... that would mean that they must be interbreeding a lot in that area.

Also, I would think a white dear would do better in the north...where there is more snow. It would be interesting to know if white herds are more prevalent more north.

It was also interesting to know that not all albino deer are sterile.http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/zoo00/zoo00975.htm

Thanks for positing the video :)
