Furious and extremely grateful

Came home from the store today to the sound of click click click click click....I immediately recognized it as the igniter on our gas stove!!!! Tried to be careful to smell for gas first but mostly I just ran upstairs to turn it off terrified it could catch fire or explode. (in hind sight I should have been more careful).

Turns out my darling big black bear had been counter surfing yet again and had turned the knob on the stove just enough to make the igniter keep going off. Absolutely can't stand the thought of what could have happened to our pups and our home - though it's possible the stove has some sort of safety mechanism that prevents accidental ignition, I just don't know.
We are extremely careful to not leave anything on the counters since Tink is a completely unapologetic counter sweeping monster however, the spoils of this dangerous counter surfing episode that were strewn all over the living room? Coffee filters.....:cussing2::cussing2:

Glad no harm for sure!!! My friends with the Bassets Hounds came home to the smell of gas several years back. Then maybe 1 year old Tank the master of counter cruising even with short legs, did get the stove on. Guess where the knobs are now....in a drawer next to the stove. My friend was just telling someone referring to the stove over the weekend, the gas grill she bought was specifically bought because of where the knobs were.

My darling Hugo taught me to take all the knobs off the range (electric) and only bring out one at a time to use then put away again. I can't tell you how many times I found the burner glowing red. And in those days, my kitchen was spotless. No food on the counters ever. The microwave and oven did extra duty as storage for bread, fruit, veggies, etc.

I miss him so. Always kept me on my toes.

So glad everything was OK! Thanks to Daria we had to take the knobs off our stove. A few years ago while I was out, she counter surfed and somehow slid a food scale onto the stove and turned the stove on. When we got home the house was filled with thick heavy smoke thanks to the melting plastic on the stove. Took quite a while for the smoke to dissipate but the stench of melting plastic hung around for days.:bah: Very thankful though that we got home when we did.

Thanks for your responses...
Oh my Jane and Mary! How scary to come home to a red glowing element or smoke filled house when Hugo and Daria turned on the electric burner. So glad everyone was all right for you too!

I will definitely be taking the knobs off or getting a cover for them - didn't realize I needed to since they are not on the front of the stove but on the side - such a long reach those newfies have!!!

Ack! So glad no one was hurt. I wasnt aware of this danger. The knobs on our stove are on the front and you have to push and turn. Still, crate when we arent home seems to be the way to go. (He would bark too much if we left him in his new pen. He doesnt like to be alone for long.)

There are childproof covers you used to be able to buy that fitted over most cookers though most gas cookers do have a safety shutoff if not lit within so long.

Scary though, its why we have an electric touch panel cooker l can switch off if need be though ours arent counter surfers yet.
