Fromm Four Star Nutritionals

We have been feeding Iz Fromm the Chicken A LA Veg variety since December. He is doing really well on it. We did A LOT of research on what to feed - even tried cooking our own for a while. We like the combination of vegetables, whole proten and they add probiotics to it after it is baked (probiotics don't survive during the high temps of production). We have been very pleased. Iz was quite sick with Hook worm a few months ago and this was the food we went to after that. He has been great ever since. His coat looks good, he is gaining weight at a normal rate (he is 6.5 months old now)... so all in all we have had great experiences with this food.

Looks good...in fact it kind of looks like a combination between Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul and Canidae!

I can't even imagine the cost of it...would you care to share? The packaging has to cost a small fortune!! Nice.

i don't mind sharing at all - but I can't remember
everytime we go to the pet store - we also MUST buy toys, bones, treats etc so it
s a small fortune... Let me tell you - Iz is a "well-taken care of" boy!!!
Seriously, I think it is in the same price range as Canidae and Solid Gold...

We fed a different Fromm's food for awhile. (Fromm's is made almost in our backyard so they did a limited release of a new food in the area and sold it in plain white bags). It was ok for awhile but then I started noticing some things I wasn't thrilled with, including some ear issues. That may very well not have been related to food however. Also, this food we were on was about half the cost of hte four-star line. not much help, I know, but I do know they were a very helpful company to work with when I called them with questions.

It is a bit pricey. For a 30lb bag it is 37.85. They also make a canned food as well that is very good, however, they charge 1.99 per can!!! I split one can each meal between the 4 of them. I basically work just to feed all of them..LOL..But it is all I can get them to eat...We have tried other brands and some get upset bellies, or they just plain won't eat it...yes...they are very spoiled:)
The dog supply store loves me.

Forgot to add...that price is for the Salmon. The Chicken is 33.25 for 30lb bag and the Whitefish and Tuna is 35.25 for a 30lb bag.

I checked out the website and I would not feed that food. It is loaded with Millet. Millet is in the corn famiy and can cause lots of allergies. Dog do not digest it so it is just a filler with no nutritional value at all. Millet is also bird seed. Would you feed your newf bird seed?

Jeannie....Loaded with Millet?? Millet is the TENTH ingredient listed, in the Fromm food.

Millet is not considered to cause a lot of allergies. It is a grain just like wheat, rice, and yes corn. To be a fact it is a good alternative to rice, or corn. Millet is in bird seed, as just another grain for a healthy diet.

Loaded was a very strong word to use I guess. I was told that millet is almost like corn in fact it is in the same family and that most dogs who are allergic to corn will also be allergic to Millet. (This was told to me by the lady who did the saliva testing for Samantha and Panda) I got the impression that millet is a low end filler not good for any nutrional value. Did I not understand her? If so please let me know.

You may have misunderstood Jeannie or that lady had no idea what she was talking about. Here are some things I pulled off the internet about millet.

"Millet is highly nutritious, non-glutinous and like buckwheat and quinoa, is not an acid forming food so is soothing and easy to digest. In fact, it is considered to be one of the least allergenic and most digestible grains available and it is a warming grain so will help to heat the body in cold or rainy seasons and climates."

"Today millet ranks as the sixth most important grain in the world..."

"Research results so far are promising, showing the grain to have great aptitude and versatility and more and more uses for millet are being discovered every year, including its potential benefits in the American diet."

Iz has eaten it now consistenly for 4 months solid - and has no problems(knock on wood) to date. I too read the same info on Millet as NewfYork posted. Iz has no ear issues etc....
By the way - the food Nature's Logic (featured at the national show) also used Millet as the binder.

It's interesting hearing about corn being a major allergen. I've only heard it here, on NN.

I've never heard it anywhere else, although I have heard that wheat and dairy are two foods that a lot of people and animals are allergic to. (Soy is moving on up the list too)

I always thought that you didn't want corn in the food because it was viewed as a cheap filler...not necessarily because it's high on the list of allergens.

Yes, it's a protein source, but not a good one, so using a food with meat or fish as the main protein source is superior.

Does anybody have any data about where corn ranks on the list of allergens for humans and/or our dogs?

Thanks everyone for your experiences and opinions; I really appreciate it. Isabella does have a corn and wheat allergy, she breaks out with bumps on her skin.

I have started the switch with them and I can say that she is not scratching half as much as she was...so that is great news! As for the millet, it is highly tolerable and is least likely to be an allergen to them. I have been told that corn and wheat are very common allergens for animals, especially those with sensitive skin issues. I am in the process now of reseaching and will post whatever information I find.

Again, thank you for the responses!

I picked up some of the Fromm Chicken a la Veg to try after saw it in one of stores I go to. Brooke and Molly really like it. Molly was picking at the Canidae and trying switching Brooke off Canidae completely. Millet is in Lana's food, Nature's Variety Venison and Millet which she does well on .... Lana's has lots of allergies including food.

The WDJ 2005 dog food report lists Fromm one of their approved dry foods. Many of their recommended foods contain Millet as one of the first 5 inredients. Just an FYI.
