BTW Loew's carries an indoor/outdoor carpet runner by the yard that works beautifully on outside ramps, slippery decks, etc. In fact it works so well that ours is not 4 years old and we will continue to use it after Echo is gone. It has ridges, and we simply stapled it to the deck, and it's not expensive.

I have this, too. Dunno if this is the exact same kind, but here it is:

I totally cannot figure out how to make this bigger...or actually put in the image and not a link...hubby made me a special program that I normally upload from...hd crashed...had to use Flickr for first time. ***Fixed it!***

And one more...so you can see it more of it:

It's wider than it looks...the edge is actually blocked from view by the counter. I have runners of it by both the front and back doors-no wiping muddy paws for me :D-and something very similar on the front porch. It's about 3 ft wide, and doesn't show anything (unless you have white dogs!). It doesn't snow on the porch, so can't tell you what it's like in the snow. The only maintenance needed seems to be vacuuming, and my cat thinks it is great for scratching, so parts of it are now fuzzy. It comes backed with rubber (well, it used to; the second pic is this kind), and without backing (the first pic)...I have both. And it comes in both black and dark grey...both colors work equally well to hide stuff. :D

I used Durlactin on my lab as he got older. I actually started using it when the liquid glucosamin chondroitin combo just wasn't doing the trick. Its kind of a step between the glucosamin without the harshness of Rymadyl or Deramax (which I had no choice to use once quality became more important than quantity of life)
But I have to say, by far the best remedy I found with hip and joint problems was physical threrapy. I took Bailey to a physical therapist and acupunturist when he literally couldn't stand on his own two feet without help, and within a month, he was RUNNING!! It was amazing. Brought tears to my eyes and still does. Not sure if anyone has these resources out there but I swear by it. Bailey did acupunture one week and physical therapy with underwater treadmill the opposite. It was the best, all natural and he loved it!! Best of luck with all your golden oldies!! :)

This is available by the yard at Lowe's. Ours is in it's 4th year on our deck and ramp. It has been wonderful not only for the dogs - all of them - but for DH and I who used to slip on the deck in winter. Snow sweeps off of it. All we had to do was staple it down with a staple gun - again over 3 years ago.

Oh, yes, Marie. This is the stuff I've been talking about. My vet took down the information when we got it and contacted a number of his patients about it. And, by the yard it is not expensive. I got something like 40 feet for less than $100.
