For those fearing heat!

Wasn't sure where to put this one but here goes:

Well here I am, into the second week of Koda's heat cycle. The original reason I joined NewfNet was fear of these weeks(also because I simply love Newfs.) So far I think everything is going well. I am mostly writing to all of those with puppies who are planning to let their girls go through heat(which they should do.) I am not a breeder and this is my first experience with any dog in season.

If it wasn't for NewfNet, I wouldn't have even known that Koda had started(which could have been big trouble for me.) About a week ago she started peeing in the house. She is potty trained and knows the rules! So I wrote to NN and I believe R Taft suggested I check Koda down there for swelling. Sure enough, it was her coming into season.

Now we are into the second phase of her cycle, from what I can tell. Today Koda did what she always does, and jumped into our bed for good morning licks. Unfortunately, our comforter is white, and today happened to be the day the bleeding started. There is not a great deal of it, but it did get on the comforter :( Now Koda is walking around in an XL diaper with a pad in it. She isn't being to fussy about the diaper so that helps. I also got myself some latex gloves and baby wipes because I want to make sure she is comfortable. After this week we will have one more week of her being in season and the biggest thing is keeping her away from those boys! It's been easy though because Koda is an indoor doggie.

Also, for those of you who aren't sure wether to let your girl go through heat, it is much healthier to let her go through it(for many reasons.) Don't listen to your vet when they tell you to spay at 6 months!

Here is to not being scared of heat anymore and to Koda being a healthier girl for going through it! :icon_bb:

I'm glad it has been going well for you! We only had a few days when River seemed to literally drip blood, and that was during the last week, after she had started "flagging." River wouldn't do a diaper, so we did a pair of boxers with her tail out the fly-hole. Hope it continues to be easy, and I'm glad you waited :)

Good information for me. Piper is 8 months old now. I've never been through a heat with a dog before. How old is Koda? Kim

Koda is a year old in just a few days, but they can come into season months earlier, or later. It all depends on your girl. One thing that helped me a lot was being prepared ahead of time. I had already ordered her diaper online and had pads for her on hand(I got human ones because I think they are designed better.)

The best thing I have found for blood spots on carpeting or other fabrics, is all fabric bleach. I just spray it on the spot and forget it. Do no rub it in.

Thank you for posting this! We are getting our little girl this Friday, and her heats are something that have me a little concerned.

I have heard from a friend in med school that peroxide is good at getting out blood (maybe it works the same with dog blood). So I have always soaked my blood stains in peroxide. Though I don't know how it would affect a rug.

Suggestions for on line ordering? I noted the idea of boxer shorts with tail out the fly. Fortunately we don't have carpet where our dogs stay. Kim

I ordered mine from amazon.com its by Four Paws and it is called the "Wee-Wee Diaper garment." I got it in XL and it has worked well so far. I will try to give you a link here but who knows if it will work http://www.amazon.com/Four-Paws-188...3?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1311579149&sr=1-3

Unfortunately as soon as Koda got blood on our comforter I ran downstairs and washed everything. It is now stained but itty bitty stains, nothing to worry about. There haven't been any other incidents with her staining other items in the house thanks to the diaper.

Part of the responsibility of any breeder is to educate their people before letting a pup go to the new home. That means covering EVERYTHING with them. Also the owner needs to know once that girl is in heat it is on leash for everything outside. NO FREEDOM unless you are there to watch her every minute ( in a fenced yard) without interruption and without obstacles in your way of seeing what she is doing for 21 days from the start of her cycle and to keep track on a calendar. Many girls are 4,5 or 6 months in between cycles. Do watch for pyo. Any young girl can develop it. Any female of any breed can develop it even though it is something mostly that 3 years and on get it but by then your girls should be spayed.

I will not let Piper out of our sight when she goes into hear....for 21 days. I appreciate all information. Kim

Don't count on the cycle being over by day 21 or 3 weeks. One of my girls is consistently fertile from day 21 on! If I went by the 3 week rule, I'd have unplanned breedings. In order to be safe, I recommend following the on leash rule for a full month. Keeping them in sight won't stop them from bolting off in order to be bred...

Thanks, I'll keep a good eye on her for a full month. We do have a 6 ft. fence....do you think she would jump it? I can certainly keep her on a leash. I've never had a dog in heat before. We are planning on spay / pexy surgery sometime after her first heat. Kim

It's not just her you have to worry about. Years ago my friends Saint ate through a side of a barn to get to a girl in heat. He was successful..:shuffle:

Hydrogen peroxide is also great for removing blood stains :)
Amen to that! I'll never be without this stuff. With my first litter last year, Faith jumped out of the whelping box and promptly delivered a pup on my beige carpeting in the whelping room.:darn::idea: With all the gook and gore of the whelping, I was certain my carpet was toast!! Poured some hydrogen peroxide on it and the stains lifted right out, thankfully. Of course I cleaned the carpeting afterwards but the HP did its job nicely:icon_bb:

Our yard is bordered on all sides by other fenced yards except a few feet in the front yard, but I went out with River on a leash every time for 4 weeks. I had nightmares that we were going to have an accidental breeding. When I was in the backyard with her (on leash) there was a big Rottie that pulled his leash out of his owner's hand and ran to the fence. Luckily I was able to get River inside before he started climbing the fence. I hadn't ever seen the Rottie before, and I haven't seen him since.

Good to know to keep Koda on leash at all times until a full month has passed. I was going by the 21 day rule but much better safe than sorry. How soon after heat do you guys recommend fixing her?
