Fish oil supplements?

Can anyone tell me if it's at all safe to give your dog/puppy fish oil supplements? I know that cod liver oil can be dangerous to dogs but what about plain fish oil?

Thanks,

Glen

I give Mollie 2 1000mg Fish Oil capsules per day with her kibble. I have heard that you should use fish BODY oil because the oils are taken from the meat of the fish and not the fins and offal and less chance of contamination.

Or you can use Salmon Oil from GNC stores.

Mine get cold pressed salmon oil. It comes in a liquid form with a pump top. Even the rescues that come and dont want to eat will eat with the fish oil on top.

So do you figure that if I were to give a 1000mg capsule to our new pup as well as Teyha that would be ok? What I'm trying to ask is whether 1000mg wouldn't be too much for the little fella?

Thanks all(again),

Glen

1000 mg is not too much as long as it is fish body oil and not cod liver oil... The guidelines for fish body oil are generally 1000 mgs per 30#s of body weight...

So one could assume that soemthing that's labeled "fish oil" and not specifically "cod liver oil" would automatically be "fish body oil" then?

Mine get fish oil - 2000 MG daily. In fact, I take it, too. Moonlight leans towards dry skin, and this has made a huge difference.

We give Grayce 1000 mg of salmon oil every day in pill form. I don't know how it works Down Under but here in the Great White North the labels have to say what kind of oil is in the pill and in what proportions from most to least. Cod liver oil would have to be only cod liver oil whereas fish oil could be oils from a variety of fish. We use salmon oil because our vet recommended for Grayces' dry skin and it reaaly helped. It also makes her coat radiant!

My vet recently told me 1600-2000mg Omega 3 Fatty Acids, so I give Snuffles a 1000 mg gel cap with each meal. Most times he eats it with his food, but like this AM it was the only thing left in his bowel. I just put a bit of peanut butter on it and it is gone.

I wonder if he would like his food if I broke it open, and mixed it in??

Cod liver oil contains lots of Vitamin A, which I understand can be toxic when too much is given. That's why Fish Oil is a better choice. Cod liver oil should only be given occasionally.

Rona? Chime in here, as I know you've researched this....
