First therapy hours - woohoo

Hi Everyone,

Siri got her first hours toward certification with the therapy organization we chose to work with yesterday. We went first to a read program at the library. It ended up being mostly toddlers, whom Siri was happy to have poke at her nose and her eyeballs and run around her, haha. Then we went to visit a nursing home and I was so proud of her. She went right up to everyone we visited and said hello (big advantage to have a dog whose head is high enough for a bedridden person to reach easily), and then when she got bored she would flop down at their feet and rest. It was so nice to be able to bring a smile to those faces. Thanks so much to Ginny for encouraging me to pursue therapy work with my girl. I think we are both going to love it!

I agree, having a "giant" breed do therapy is wonderful for the bedridden or even wheelchair bound patients. Even for me I say the neat thing about Thunder is I can pet him without leaning over and hug him without worrying about hurting him.

Therapy work is one of the most rewarding things one can do with their dog and most newfies just seem to be naturally suited to do this most honorable job. Congratulations!!!!

I've done therapy work with Pets for Life with BossMan for a couple of years. I've never been happier!! I live for those visits to the locked down mental wards we move through. In June, an entire room filled with Bingo players broke into a spontaneous round of Happy Birthday to BossMan (he turned 5 that month!) And he even got into it with a whoooo-roooo! You'll LOVE doing this, and I'll bet the dog really gets into it also.

Way to go and Congrats on some great visits.
I work in a SNF and know how much the residents look forward to the weekly pet therapy visit, they always know the dogs name even if they don't know their own.
I have taken Abbey to visit once and I am taking her again this week, but because she is still teething I only let her visit a few of the residents (and her mouth faces me).
