Feeding our Newf

O.K. I have read through many of the threads and still have some questions about feeding our new "little" addition. I read from one breeder to add cooked rice and ground meat to a high quality dry food. Also, we should feed our baby string beans and apples. I understand that we will need to feed him 2 - 4 cups per day plus. How about Vitamin C and joint supplements? This is our first Newf (I think his name will be Max we are allowing our biological children name him). We pick him up tomorrow.

I'll let the experts chime in on the feeding .. Welcome to Newf Net and make sure we get our pictures of your new baby boy..

I'd be very interested in the boards answer to this as well ready for when we pick ours up. Especially in relation to the vitamin and joint supplements as I have heard so many conflicting opinions.

Cheers

Capt. Dave,
You mentioned you read "...from one breeder". Is that the breeder you're getting your puppy from?

P.S., I sent you a PM.

Most people on here will tell you to feed what your breeder tells you to feed. Because I feel for you in trying to make this decision, I'll just tell you what we fed our pups when they came home from their breeders. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, it's just what we did and 3 and 4 years later I'm happy with those decisions.

Both were on adult premium kibbles (Eagles Pack chicken, Wysong, Canidae are just a few people on here have fed to puppies). In addition I gave them a joint supplement, 500 mg Vit. C, 400 iu Vitamin E. Also a small amount of yogurt for one meal. Other than that I didn't feed other things except as treats. I gave them both 3 meals a day until they were 5 or 6 months old.

Feeding a growing puppy is a constantly changing exercise. You constantly need to adjust amounts and not be afraid to try something new if what you're feeding isn't working. One thing you'll find from reading posts on here is that every dog is different and they all react differently to different feeding programs. When they start losing teeth then you may need to supplement with a natural form of calcium. Some things people have had success with are sardines and raw turkey necks.

Just one person's experience....

Thanks for the advice. I wanted some others opinion prior to picking up our new family member from the breeder and taking him to the Vet. I like bouncing ideas off of those folks. I just want the most healthy pup I can raise.

We've fed a mix of things to our two dogs as pups. Neither one did well on Candiae. One we fed a raw diet from the age of 6 months and he was fed Solid Gold Wolf Cub (or something like that) as a young guy. Our newf we tried Canidae and quickly switched to Nature's Variety and she's done wonderfully on that since. Just gotta find what works for your pup and breeder recommendations are good as they know what works for growth in their lines.

Gracie was fed raw from 8 weeks till she was 4 yrs.
Dudley was fed Eukanuba (bad owner, didn't know better!!)
Nicholas was fed Eagle Pack Holistic Fish (also bad for puppies)
Evan was fed Eagle Pack Giant Breed Lamb and Rice (good owner!!, this is one of the few puppy kibbles with lowish protein, in fact the only difference I seem to remember was the Omegas were different to the adult).
What is the breeder suggesting you feed?

I wish you well on this one. I agree with do what works for you and your breeder most likely knows what works for the lines as mentioned above. the supplements, I came home from the breeder doing vit-c 500mg daily, vit-e 400, fish oil 1 cap daily, and glucosamine 250mg daily. checked with the vet as well and she agreed with the supplements that the breeder suggested.

We feed raw, but as far as suppliments, we give Cosequin DS (joint suppliment) and have since he was a pup at the recommendation of our breeder. He's our first newf so I can't say whether or not is has helped, but he's had no issues so far.
