Excess Saliva

Just recently, Riley has been gagging on his saliva when he lays down on his side at night. I find patches of wetness on the carpet. He wakes himself up and will constantly swallow. During the day he's fine because he doesn't lay on his side. Any suggestions or ideas before I'm running off to the vet?

Oh, poor Riley. It sounds like he might have an upset tummy. Do you have an Pepcid you can give him? Are you still giving him broccoli with his meals? That can be gassy or upsetting. I hope he feels better soon!

Riley hasn't had broccoli for quite awhile. I only add a couple to tsps of unsweetened applesauce to his kibble.

Could he have swallowed something that's irritated his throat? Been ill or coughing? Any cuts in his mouth or sore teeth?

Hope he's better soon. Please keep us updated.

Last night wasn't as bad as it has been. Only once, did he wake himself up gagging a bit. I've checked his mouth, tongue, teeth and throat and don't see anything unusual. He's eating normally. Riley does snore quite loudly at night and goes into a very deep sleep. It seems the excessive saliva wakes him up.

i am not going to say this to panic you, becouse odds are this is not what he has, but, it did remind me of hadley
when she got sick she was drooling really bad.
to the extent when sleeping with her head on her leg, her leg would be soaked.
i doubt this is what you boy has, but, i would look up megasophagus to, just to be sure that you may not be dealing with something like that either.
he is fine otherwise?

It seems odd that it would only be at night. I would think if it was something to worry about, like Sar mentioned, it would be happening all the time.

Thanks Christine for the link on megasophagus. Riley has no problems eating and does not regurgitate food or water. I can't associate any information I read to what Riley is doing, which is a good thing.

Susan, we run humidifiers during the winter months.

Lynn, Riley's fine during the day, acting his normal self, it's just at night that he goes through this when he falls into a deep sleep while laying on his side. It usually only happens once, then he's OK the rest of the night.
