Embarrassing habit

I am very embarrassed to write this but I have caught my dogs eating poop. We feed them fromms and they often don't eat, but poop really????

Their own? My dogs will eat deer poop if I don't catch them...which is a gross way of eating veggies.

They often don't eat? Is this the food your breeder recommends?

It is a very difficult thing to fix....Depends on why it started too
Some puppies learn from their mom's, it is really difficult to fix. Picking up as soon as might break the habit....

Pineapple is supposed to help

Some dogs it is diet related, they are missing something in their diet. One of our local vets really believes giving a teaspoon of kelp might eventually help, but you will still have to pick-up to get out of the habit.
Telling them off will not work, because all they will do is do it whilst you are not looking, just like with potty training.

I think a combo of all might help....Also maybe initially doing the potty on lead, really praising and quickly getting rid of the offending matter.

If it is horse/deer/cow poop, I would not worry. A great way to get digested veggies and get some excitement out of you when they give you a big kiss after eating it.

It will be a tough road to travel.........

I would have to agree with Ronnie, the best way to avoid coprophagia is to pick it up right away. Some dogs will do this more in the colder weather than warm. You can try Forbid or DisTaste which you can find in the vet office or pet store. Adding a couple teaspoons full of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling with spices) might help as well and some have had success with the pinapple. Pumpkin is a great thing to have in your dogs medicine cabinet anyway:)
recheck the amount of food and type of you are feeding, as it pertains to your dog's lifestyle.

We think they are either eating our 12 yr German Shorthair's poop (female) or my son's dachshounds poop. They have not eaten their own. I am curious why pineapple works?

Fergus tried this in the winter time when his poop was frozen, he'd come in with a brown ring around his mouth. Tried pineapple for a week and he hasn't done it since.
