dry mouth

I've been reading/hearing different things about being able to breed a dry mouthed dog. Keep in mind I know nothing about breeding...so I'm clueless. I can see where you can have ones that are less drooly...but am fiding it hard to believe you can actually breed it out of them without changing their look. I've seen Newfs with larger flews than others...would a dry mouthed one be one with "tight lips"??

You'll find I'll be the one asking tons of "off the wall" questions as I am trying to gain as much knowledge as I can before I have to go on the "great Newfie quest". I'll either be the most informed or most confused one when it comes time to get a puppy! ;)

Ok so I am no expert, but from what I have heard there is no such thing as a dry mouth newf. There are some that have smaller flews that may drool less, but dry?? NO WAY.

Flews for a newf are important. When a newf swims the flews float on the water allowing the dog to breathe. Why would anyone want to breed a much needed characteristic from a newf? If someone does not want drool, well they don't want a newf. Plain and simple. I have heard of people having the flews surgically sewn shut. Personally I would like to sew their mouths shut

Surgically sewing their flews shut???? OH MY! I don't think I want to know more about that. I'm the type that about goes off the deep end when I hear/see/think of an abused animal.

The image of a Newfs flews floating on top of the water gives me the giggles! Kind of the same thing as my Golden with his head out with the window with his itty bitty baby flews and eyelids flapping in the breeze! I have yet to see a Newf swimming in person. SOmeday....

Karen I would gladly send you some "newfie drool" if you would like. I have a jar and everything (there is no drool in it right now). Matter of fact I got a good glob the other day while I was making out some bills and I sent the bill with the extra addition (not $$).
I also like to use the slobber as the excuse why my house looks like it does!

I guess I got lucky with Maddie. She has a dry mouth. She was 5 months when I got her from rescue, and I thought maybe she was too young to drool.
When we went to puppy class we practiced having other people come up to the dogs to say hello and give them a treat. One of the women complained saying Maddie slobbered all over her. The trainer and I just laughed and told her that was nothing for a Newf !!

I was wondering about this, since Rory does not drool either. As a matter of fact, when we are eating, my little black lab will be sitting by the table drooling profusely, while Rory has no drool. I think nature got some wires crossed here somewhere. I would like to know if this is an individual characteristic or the particular line Rory is from. I am going to do some research and talk to the breeder.

Bubba drools, but only in certain situations, just after drinking, or during play/walks. Other than that, he's pretty good. Not drymouth, but pretty good.
In the past month or so, he's started the whole headshake thing just after he finishes drinking, which if you're standing in the hallway with him, is pretty darn close to having a shower. I swear it rebounds off the walls and comes back at you.

Well, may I describe the foot long drools from Brady's mouth! We just grab them with our hands and wipe them on our shirts, pants or whatever is close. He is so cute though, drool and all.

Do Newfs normally drool from day one? Moya doesn't drool either...only slightly after drinking water.

Well, we're very proud to say that Bryce is already drooling at 13 weeks! It's really cool and we usually come home from the beach with short stretches of shiny dried drool mixed with sand all over our pants, shirts, bags! OH! I found some on the cupboard! It's so cool! His flews are really starting to hang!

Our Sara does not drool too much. When we first got Samantha we thought she didn't drool much either, but wow has that changed. She is a regular drool machine. When she got to be around 4 years old it was like the faucet turned on and there is no off!! We have color coordinated drool towels for our house and to match our clothes when we are going places. :D

Emmett Dry mouthed, exepting when after drinking water,
same with Morgan and Penny, Sydney on the other hand.........drummroll!
he has flugers that hang to the ground, i am learning my shoe works well to take the fluger before it starts flinging.
some have dry mouths some dont, doesnt mean the drymouthed newfs can swim well, cant retrieve well, nor does it mean they malfunction.
emmett retrieves with the best of them, swims with the best of them same with the rest of my drymouths.

When I got Eja he didn't drool much at all...I thoughtit was just being a puppy and at 8 months I am still waiting. He doens't have very big flews and the most i get is if he sees food and his eyes are fixated on it..otherwise...nothing...

My son MORE than makes up for what Moya doesn't produce...He's deep into teething and my arm is soaked right now! Wish he'd get a tooth already.
