doggie doorbell

I have a friend who sells doorbells for the disabled and recently has a product out that is a "doggie doorbell" device for service dogs. He has gotten interest from people who own dogs (non service) because they use it so the dogs can ring the bell to be let out/in. I'm curious if anyone here would buy this? I think it runs like $90. It's not for sale yet.

Lulu rings her bell to go out. Unfortunately, I can't hear it because of my deafness. But my hearing dog Lili comes and gets me when she hears it. Then they both get to go out! Personally, I think it works but $90 may be a bit on the high side for some disabled people, who are frequently on fixed incomes.

We just hung some Christmas jingle bells on the doorknob and she learned to "touch" the bells to be let about. It took about a week. I can't fathom spending $90 on a door bell for Thora, especially when her service dog harnesses cost that much. I would think that maybe if you had a deaf alert dog and a light flashed when the dog touched it (like the fire alarms?), it might be worth it to someone with that disability.

I agree with the cost issue, but have no experience on the other issue, a flashing light, etc. We bought a strip of bells for about $7.00 and hung them on the door. We didn't know how to teach Darcy to ring them, but when she would stand at the door to go out, we would tap them with our hand and say, "Good girl! Outside." It only took a few days before she was ringing them with her nose. Now, if we aren't up quickly enough to let her out, she walks up to them and bangs them back and forth, causing quite a commotion!

:groovy: Good Girl Darcy! If all else fails....create a scene to get someone's attention.

Riki runs the blinds. lovely sound in the middle of the nite. I would go crazy if I put bells up. I think she just likes the noise!

Whoa. $90 is too much. We have a big bell for Steely hanging on the back door that she rings when she wants to go out. I think it was 20 bucks. It took her about a month to train her on it. But seriously, $90? You could go to the store and buy a cow bell and tie it to the door knob.

How does she inform you she wants in? How would you hear a cowbell from outside if you're inside and upstairs?

And remember this is for people with different breeds. He did show me one clip where it actually opens the door for the dog-that would be cool-but what's to stop anyone from using it?

Looks like we may have a few NN'ers that might be willing to test his prototype and give some 'real life' feedback. I'd give it a go.

Pretty much the same system here.........it works!

Yep, I agree with other posters. I went to a big box craft store, bought a couple of oversized Xmas bells, tied them with some extra long shoe strings, and hung them on my doors. I taught my rescue mutt how to use them (with her nose) within a week, and this was on a girl that had never even been housebroken! Boss lets us know by herding us toward the LR or back kitchen door!! When he hits that herding behavior, ignore at your own risk!
