Do you think this is a Newf?

On Oznewf (like Newf-L but Australia and New Zealand based), someone sent a message saying they had heard there is a one year old Newfie in a shelter near here. They are going to contact Newf Rescue about him.

I had a look at the shelter site and saw a photo of the dog I think is being referred to. They have him labelled as a Bernese Cross, doesn't really look Bernese to me though.

Do you think he looks like a Newf? His legs look a bit skinny for a purebred I thought. And his feet look too small. Maybe a cross though. What happenes if he is a not a pure Newf? I guess rescue doesn't get involved?

To me it does not look like a purebred newf. Did you check for web feet? Looks more like a flat coated retriever mix of some sort. Usually rescue does not get involved with newf mixes.

Very pretty dog thought. I hope he get's adopted

Looks like a Lab Newf mix, the head does look a bit newfie, but more labby becouse of the schnoz on it. the coat also looks like a mix of newf coat and labby coat. the length of lab coat the thickness of newf coat.

I would say a lab/newf mix. The shape and head structure looks like a lab's, but the hair and bushy tail looks more like a newf.

I agree with Newf York. However, I am NO authority on anything. I don't see any berner traits there either. More lab looking in the face I think.

But, it's a cutie. Hope s/he goes to a good home.

Update - someone from Ausnewf went to the shelter today, spoke to staff there, he is apparently a Newf mix, but it wasn't found out with what. They met him , played with him, said he looks all Newfie at first glance but is obviously a cross. He is supposed to be good with other dogs and very friendly...I'm sure he will go quite quickly if this is the case. His info has been posted on Ausnewf if anyone is lurking from the Melbourne area who is in two minds about having a Newf...you can have a Newf cross instead!
