Current flea/tick medication

I know we've talked a lot about flea/tick medications on here, but it's been awhile and I'm curious to know what your newf is currently on. Elvis has been on a variety (for no specific reason) but I'm wondering if there's something out there that's better than the rest.

For what it's worth, we live in NE Ohio but Elvis doesn't run around in the woods, roll around in the grass, or play too much with other dogs. Our yard has normal suburban animals - birds, chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits, ducks, and while I've never actually seen them we know deer pass through every once in awhile.

We had use K9 advantix. We used to use promeris and before that frontline and before that Adams flea dip. I do not really see where on or the other works any better/different. We did have to stop the frontline because it seemed like the ticks in our area had developed some sort of tolerance to it.

Vectra 3D. We used that for 2 years and she got only a couple of ticks. We switched to frontline as current vet did not stock Vectra. However, she recently started stocking it and recommended not using frontline as its not working for her clients anymore.

Vectra here. My newfs were starting to be sick with vomit for about 5 days after using the frontline, so this was recommended by my vet who himself raises Newfs. The breed seems to tolerate it very well, and it does not get into their system like the others. Works great too!

I switched over to Revolution last year or the year before. I think Charlie posted something that just plain ol' bugged me one day (pun meant) and it had to do with the EPA and the FDA. Most flea and tick meds are only approved through the EPA....not my idea of safe for my dogs, so we switched to the FDA approved Revolution. I've recently started to use DE both in the yard at home and where I walk the dogs at work. Really honestly hate any of it, it's always made me feel like I'm poisoning my dogs, and I am :(

Here's a link I just found with the listings of flea and tick meds..

p.s. Promeris-on this list (which we have used on Myra in the past and she cried each time--used it twice, still have the 3rd container) is no longer being made.

I like Vectra 3D specifically because you can bathe the dog 24 hours after applicatin and only need to keep the dog separate from the cats for 24 hours, versus a much longer timeframe with other flea and tick meds. Somethingt o think about if you have cats or are a frequent Newf bather :)

I've got 3 cats here, which is probably why we've never used Vectra.
What I meant to say is that pretty much all flea & tick products for use on dogs are toxic to cats, and because of that cats have to be separated from a treated dogs for several days...with Vectra, you only have to keep the cats separated from the dog for 24 hours, which is much better than 96 hours! As you know I'm currently catless as of this past fall, so it's not a big deal anymore...but back when I had cats, this was a big plus for me :)

I am glad to see this as I am a novice at flea and tick problems. Having dogs for over 50 years, we never had fleas or ticks. Moonlight had one last year that had to be surgically removed - yuck. This year apparently the whole region of the country is infested, and I have pulled two off Moonlight and 4 off me! So, I'm treating the yard and investigating what I should put on the dogs. Vet said Frontline Plus or KY Advantix. Can both of these be bought over the counter or do you need prescriptions like heartworm meds?

Revolution, we switched over about a year ago. We used Frontline before, but I was finding fleas on the dogs. No problems with Revolution so far!

I buy K9 Advantix without prescriptions. If you check out a Petsmart/Petco/1800Petmeds etc, you will see what does and doesn't need a script. I HAVE found that the "generic" version that is supposed to be just like Advantix does NOT work the same way though! I actually order mine online (I live in the boonies) and have auto order at petmeds so I don't even have to remember I need more. lol
