I left Harley Uncrated this morning and went to work. :shocker:

I'm concerned not about messing in the house but about chewing...

I'll go home at lunch and check on him.

It was just over a year ago that we trained Khabo out of his crate. I remember being on eggshells the whole day just waiting to see what I would walk into. I was picturing the worst. Thankfully, he was a total angel and has been out of his crate ever since.

:hugs: Hugs that Harley is good as gold! I don't look forward to that day when it comes to test Cooper!

it was not till the last 6 months that I trusted Bagel. and hannah... well she still will get into stuff if she can... but she mostly just sleeps... at nearly 7 she's a good girl MOST of the time...

I did block off from going upstairs for them so they have their choice of 2 chairs 3 sofas or their crate. and i left the TV on in the kitchen....

well he's passed 1 and 2 hour tests... but this one is FOUR HOURS...

my only concern is he seems much more agitated when I leave him out of the crate.

so what i did was put him in the crate this morning and shut the door but not lock it. Did the same for Hannah too... I expect to find both of them at the door when I get home at lunch. then I have to leave again.

Snuffles just got trusted out of the crate by Grandma like last September, at like 4 and a half years old. He never exhibited like he would have a problem, and had been uncrated when he stayed at Aunt Ellen's with no problems. I was never worried.

On thing we do do is have him in his crate when we leave. He always knew when the Kong toy came out of the freezer with peanut butter he was to go in his crate. And when he hears the crinkle in the plastic freezer bag, he knows. He will get the toy a lot of the times in the kitchen and go straight to his crate and lay down to chow down. I think that helps get him in the mindset we will be gone for a while. Of course now we do not shut the door to the crate. When the crate was in the basement, he may be laying in his warm weather spot at the foot of the steps in the basement, and now that his crate is on the first floor for winter, he seems to just lay near the front door, another normal sleeping spot. Seems to work for us.

Let me also just add, when we do leave, I specificly say, "Don't eat the house!", and so far Snuffles has obeyed me perfectly.........or at least in this instance.

YAY! I came home and they greeted me at the door... I felt one couch was warm so i'm sure that was hannah. the evil dog retention unit (a piece of wallboard) had been knocked down but it does not appear they went upstairs...

they were happy to see me but harley was not unduly stressed or clingy...

Yay!!!!!!!!!!!

let's see how the crate free afternoon goes...

Keep up the good work, Harley! I remember those times coming home at lunch to make sure the house was still in one piece. Thankfully, it would be. Then, the little bugger would always decide to chew something in the afternoon!

Oh you are a BRAVE Woman! I'd have to hang around and peak through the windows. I have a VERY GOOD IMAGINATION and would picture all kinds of things happening while I'm away. I won't go into all the "Visions" in my head, it would freak you out for sure!

I will only leave Husker out when one of is home. I think it is way to dangerous for him at any age to be left out alone. He does stay out all night now.

really? In what way? (being serious here as I always worried about that but my professional trainer thinks they should be able to be out of the crate after a certain amount of training/age)

This morning I came down and there was styrofoam all over the living room. As I was cleaning up I realized Husker had reached up to the middle of the rather large square coffee table we have and took one of the plastic fruits out of the bowl that used to be there.

I had a sheppard/lab mix that died while I was at work because he had found some rat poison that I had no knowledge my landlord had come in and put around.

Husker had chewed on my laptop power cord, and he is constantly finding stuff I thought I put away. when I am home I can catch most stuff before it becomes a hazard. But if he is in his crate while we are at work I know he is safe.

Terry, has Husker been taking lessons from Ricky? I will have to talk to Ricky about teaching Husker bad chewing on things he's not supposed to.:ah:

well it turns out there was a casualty.

seems Hannah helped herself to some peppermint bark (yes dark chocolate was involved) my husband had on his night table. I found the wrapper in her crate this morning. He looked for it last night when he went to bed.

now i have that whole toxic chocolate thing to worry about...

You're a brave woman! It's beem ages since I had a dog that was allowed free run of the house when I'm not home.

Here's hoping that Hannah and Harley do well today and that there are no problems from the chocolate!

we leave ours in certain areas when we are out, have never used a crate and apart from Jessie and first 7 months of seperation anxiety we don't have any problems. We do a quick recce every day just to make sure there is nothing chewable or eatable on the side but leave them quite happily with food, water and chews. They are checked every 4 hours if we are going to be out a long time so they can have a toilet break as I'll come home if the partner is working during the day . We dont have many problems though.

If you're going to be out a long time is there a neighbour or friend who could pass by until you get back from work just to give you peace of mind.

Harley won't go out for anyone but me. not even my husband or daughter. Right now he's not speaking to my husband because he was the only one in the room when something fell off the table and startled him.

if i don't go home, he won't go out. he'd rather lay in the crate.

I left them this morning. they seem so confused when I leave them uncrated....
