Concererned about boarding the boys

We have to board our boys for 9 days this October as we are going to attend our daughters wedding in Punta Cana, D.R., this will be the first separation from us ever. So we decided to try a 3 day kennel stay in September, to ensure to them that we will return. We have taken them to the kennel a couple of times to meet the caretakers and experience the environment and smell. I hope we have covered everything to make it easier for them, and other suggestions?

Have you looked into having a petsitter come to your house to look after them? I do it a lot for other people and it always goes really well. I've never had a dog with anxiety or anything like that, I think because they are in their own home. I usually stay overnight at the house but I have had someone watch our pets once that just came by to let them out/ feed a few times a day. Either way I would definitely ask around and get references from people you know, not just online. Good luck!

I recently boarded Sam for 6 nights. I have only had him for 4/5 months, and he was really anxious when I adopted him. He has since settled in, but I was worried that boarding would cause him to become very anxious all over again. I found a place near my home that did boarding, AND doggie daycare, where he could play with other dogs instead of being isolated. I dropped Sam off for doggie daycare several times before we actually went on our trip. I did several half days and one full day.

When I dropped him off, I pretty much ignored him-no tearful goodbyes! When I picked him up, same deal-I just ignored him. (I told them I was going to do this and why so they would not think I did not love Sam! :D) They said he seemed most anxious the first day, but then not so much after that.

He actually gave himself two major hotspots two days before I was supposed to leave :grrr: so I had to drop him off with meds, sprays, and an e-collar, and they had to keep him separated instead of in with the other dogs like he was used to. He barked and barked when I finally left him for my trip-I think b/c I had to leave him in a different room, and he was stressed/itchy due to the huge hotspots. However, when I came home, he was calm as can be, and they said he had done fine. He even ate his food every single day (when I adopted him, he did not eat for 5 days!). He came home, settled right in, and displayed no anxiety. I was so pleased. It was well worth the extra expense of a few days of doggie daycare to keep his anxiety level low. I shudder to think what it would've been like to drop him off somewhere sick that he had never been before with total strangers.

Best wishes finding a place for your boys.

The place I'm at includes daycare with the boarding price. All our boarders are with the daycare kids all day. Since you have three, try to find a place that has suites big enough for all three to stay together, that will help them. Also bring some of their things from home, blankets, toys, a tshirt with your scent on it, etc. I would bring them ahead of time like you said, so the place is familiar to them. When I boarded my two newfs years ago, it was with a woman who did Newf Rescue and had a boarding kennel of her own. They got the biggest suite, and I felt good knowing they knew newfs.

We had a petsitter come to the house when we went to Cuba and the dogs just love him. They feel very comfortable when in their own home, no stress for a new place.

I worry about boarding too. We've never done it, always had a pet sitter. I want to research some good boarding facilities in case we ever need to leave town quickly and can't give enough notice to pet sitter. Sounds like you are giving this a lot of thought. Kim

I've always used a "pet sitter" too. The dogs know him as "Uncle Mike". Plus, the added bonus is that when I'm gone, he mows my grass too ....

We're going away this weekend and have a pet sitter coming to stay. Previously we had friends (with lots of dog experience) come to stay at the house.

Boarding was more expensive than the sitter given that we have the two dogs and NoisyCat.
