Cherry Eye

Orca's ending his last week of wearing the cone of shame since his cherry-eye surgery. He managed to destroy 2 cones to bits and pieces, got a temporary donut, and is now on his third cone in 10 days. I think I've got the secret to making them last, though. So, for progeny, if the cone looks flimsy, be sure to duct tape it right away! This helped to make the cone last a bit longer, although it didn't completely prevent destruction. We finally went to a pet store, but the largest cone they had, and removed the flimsy button type closure (he kept running into things and breaking it) so I went to Home Depot and replaced them with zip ties. Problem solved (I hope!)

Here are some pictures of my boy in his cones.

Poor boy! Those cones look far too flimsy, did you ask if the vet had any to borrow?
Glad he is on the mend and doesn't have to wear it any more.

Poor pup!

For future reference, the comfy cone works way better than those plastic things. Maggie figured out in about 5 min that if she threw herself on the ground head first that the little clips would break open. She killed her first cone in about 30 min. Now we have a comfy cone and its much better.

Thanks, Brandie! We needed something to keep his paws (front and back) from his eyes, so the only real option was the e-collar. One was too wide and he figured out how to pull it to the side and fit his paw in, so that didn't work either.

How did the surgery go? What did the vet have to say about Orca's prognosis? Will the redness go away? I have no experience with cherry eye and hope it was a success for Orca.

The surgery went very well, no problems, although the surgeon did call while he was in there to request permission to tighten Orca's eyelids a bit too (we agreed). We were told the eye area swells quite a bit and that the eyes would look normal after the swelling had gone down. The redness should go away to some degree, although his lower eyelids do get tighter and looser throughout the day so I expect some visible redness.

By the way, have any of you noticed the phenomenon I'm describing? His eyelids can be very very loose when he wakes up or when he's sleepy, and then tighter at other times of the day?

He has the follow-up visit, and gets rid of the cone, on this coming Friday. I imagine the prognosis will be good, but I will admit I am slightly worried about the remaining redness.

We also get the loose sometimes eyes on katy bear...especially if she is tired. But when she is naughty or playful she pulls the tight. That is why our vet said not to worry about them. She really has no issues and is five now.

I am so glad the surgery went well :)
