I have started giving Bella and Sampson Bumblebee canned red sockeye salmon (lucky them) 2 questions - there are some soft bones/spine in there - are they harmful ?(i usually remove the "spine" if it is in there) and 2) do i need to rinse it before feeding??

Thanks

There is no need to remove any of the bones and no need to rinse. Unlike the brine in Jack Mackerel and canned sardines you can give them the liquid in the can as well.

Send me the bones! That's my favorite part! Love the gritty crunch and flavor. Oh, the skin too! Love it!

Peter,
What's wrong with the liquid in canned Sardines? I regularly feed Sardines packed in water and pour the entire contents into Oliver's bowl.

Peter,

The water in the sardine cans is brine, water saturated with salt, and may cause excessive thirst (although that can be hard to tell with a Newf) and in some cases results in loose stools. This is more of a problem with the 15 oz cans of Jack Mackerel which has only 10 oz of fish and five ounces of brine. If you are using the 4 oz cans of sardines, then the amount of brine may be insignificant.

Because the fish is cooked in the can, much of the nutrient goes into the water and if your Newf can tolerate the brine, then he will be getting all the goodness of the sardines.

I feed canned salmon with all the bones too, and the dogs seem to absolutely love it. I had worried about the bones, but been told by another pet owner that they could eat them. I was always just a tad uneasy about it, so this discussion has eased my discomfort with the cruchies!
Thanks all
Mary

Mine eat Red Canned Salmon at least twice a week. Bones and all, snap...snap...Gobble...Gobble...All Gone! They are soft bones, and the dogs just crunch them!

I used to drain canned salmon because I was worried about sodium, but if the juice is not bad for them I will use it. I know they would love it poured on top of their food.

I did'nt want to use canned because of the salt content, so I found a fish market where I get fresh big frozen ones 2lbs for $6. It lasts me a couple of weeks.

I feed Husker a can of red Alaskan salmon at least three times a week and I always mix it in with his dry food and he loves it.
