Breeders needed for Bloat survey

Got this from Dr. Battaglia's Breeding Better Dogs newsletter.

"Please take our Bloat Survey Breeding Better Dogs (Survey is at the top of the page on the menu bar)

The literature on Bloat points in many directions which has not brought breeders any closer to a solution. For these reasons we have developed a new survey that focuses on some of the factors that might contribute to its occurrence.

We need breeders: That had a dog that bloated and/or a dog that did not bloat. This survey is the joint effort of: Dr. Carmen Battaglia PHD of the AKC and Dr. Cindy Otto DVM, Univ. Penn, Vet School.

Our goal is to look at conditions that are relevant to the further study of this disease. Your contribution is appreciated. A summary of the results and findings will be posted on our website in November 2010. More will be reported in the Newsletter.

As of June 14, we have had 1,600 breeders complete the survey. Input has come from several countries.

The survey has been limited to 1 access per computer. If more dogs are to be submitted breeders can use another computer but the survey is set up to have information about all 3 in the same survey. Can you help circulate the information?

Thanks for any help that you can give to this effort. Send this to those who you know might participate.

Yes Lin. I think it's because they are looking for familial ties so need as much family history as possible.

I filled it for one dog, but there were no questions on family history (just one asking if sire/dam/littermates bloated). The others were more related to the conditions the dogs were kept in (easier to answer if the owners actually submit it rather than the breeder..)

Hi All,
I too wished to participate in this BUT I am not the breeder. I have my girl who has had two issues with bloat. I feel strongly that the owners who have gone through this first handed would be a great resource. Don't understand why that it is not open to us.

I think it would be great if you contacted your breeder and asked them to participate since you've had bloat issues. I think they must be looking for a genetic link and that's why they want breeders who can supply that info.

They may be trying to avoid a duplication of information. Hopefully, you can get her breeder to respond.
