My neighbor has a beautiful red Cardinal who for the last week or so has been deliberately flying into his kitchen window, car windows, and the windows of a horse trailer sitting outside. Does anyone know what this behavior could be ? It happens day and night..periodically
he's being territorial; they'll do this sometimes, they see their reflection in the glass and will attack the interloping bird they see there. It's most common when they have a nest in the area.
Ocean might be right. I love cardinal's and watch them all year round here. They are very territorial and I will see them chase away any other cardinal that come's on their turf.
Ocean's right...he'd do it to anything that he saw his reflection in; hub caps, a car's side mirror, the body of a dark clean car, windows, etc. It is a bit unsettling to see that kind of behavior...
Perhaps southern cardinals are different. We have lots of birds fly into our front window but don't remember ever seeing a cardinal do it and we have lots of them. We try to hang sun catchers etc. in the window so they can recognize it's a window and not see it as more territory. Ours seem to get along with each other pretty well.
