Big dog diet?

Hello,
This is my first post in this particular area. My Male Newf is overweight and is also starting to have hip problems. I do exercise him but it doesn't seem to help. I've cut back on his food. I read about a green bean diet where you substitute about half the dog food with green beans. Before I try I wanted to know if anyone has tried this or has any other suggestions. He's eating 2 cups/day Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul plus an occasional treat. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Patricia,
Yes, I have used the green been diet when my guys have gotten a little chunky. It does work...but takes time. It is also important to keep them exercised. I've found that unless they get moving..the weight is not easy to get off them. Having 2 newfs, I'm sure you know that most aren't going to run around alot by themselves. There are some that do..but once they get a little older, most of them would just as soon lay on the couch :D So a daily walk or ball throwing etc would help alot. Good luck!!

Patricia,

Is this the same boy who is charging at other dogs? If it is, how old is he, and have you had his Thyroid tested? Agression, and weight changes are symptoms of Thyroid. What is his coat like?

if the thyroid checks out ok, than i would do controlled excersise with him,.
if he is "just excersising in the yard" that is not enough, he needs to walk on the beach or swim or go for walks.
good luck!
you also can give him joint health made by http://www.springtimeinc.com
;)

I thank everyone for their input. Yes, this is the same guy who's dog aggressive. I will definitely have his thyroid tested.

Green bean diet has been tried (still in effect, actually) and it really does work. Sometimes I substitute some frozen carrots or peas or something just for something a little different! good luck. Troy's thyroid is bad too........
