Best food for pups

Hello,

I'm not quite sure what to do about my 12-week-old newfie's diet. Our breeder had him on Purina One Lamb & Rice adult dog food, so we continued to feed him that when we got home, but our vet suggested we use a different food. The problem is that she wanted to put him on Pro Plan Large Breed Puppy food and I'm very apprehensive about doing that, especially after reading some of the problems it causes in giant breed dogs. Now I'm not sure what to do because our vet didn't seem to be happy about what we were feeding him, but I'm not happy with what the vet wants to feed him. I have seriously started to consider an all-natural diet, but I'm afraid I won't do it correctly. Is there a certain brand that any of you swear by?

Hi Nicole,

First you need to be sure of what your contract with your breeder states. If it requires you to feed a certain food, then you need to discuss with them why, and work through the contract again if you agree on a change, or else you may be in violation of the agreement.

Other than that, don't feel bad, I don't always agree with what a vet says about nutrition either. I believe most on this board feed a high quality adult lamb and rice to their puppies. Check out the thread under 'Maladies and Diseases' titled "Bowed Front Legs". It might help you in your decision.

i agree but i differ in that i dont prefer lamb over chicken, or beef.
;)
there are several great brands out there, i prefer the wysong synorgen, and than at 10 months switch to the growth.

You are better off having your pup on an adult food than puppy food. If you decide not to go with what the breeder suggests, I would switch to another adult formula.

Thanks so much for sending me the links, they were very helpful. I am going to stick with the food that our breeder suggests, I have a lot of confidence him, I was just thrown off when the vet suggested LBP food. Thanks again, I'm sure y'all have answered this question 1,000 times.

Interesting you should mention this since I have heard the same recently, but haven't heard too much more about it. I feed the chicken formulas.

Oh no the old which food to feed subject! I went thru it too, as stated many of us have! It drove me crazy for a while.
1st there are many good dog foods out there. And your vet doesn't have to agree with what you feed your pup. Your puppy will grow just fine without any large breed formula. Listen to all the good advise here!
It helps put your mind at ease!
I fed and still feed Malcolm a chicken rice oatmeat adult food. He has done well. No puppy food for him. And no large breed dogfood either.

IF your breeder is an expereinced breeder and you have confidence iin his/her instructions I would follow that. I would also check your contract before switching foods. Some breeders specify to feed only certain foods or not to feed certain other foods or they will not honor the guarantee. For instance, I know several who will specify they will not guarantee their pups if you feed a raw diet.
