Bentley, the manny

I just had to tell you about Bentley. He has come so far in a year. He still has some issues and is still a work in progress; but he is a joy :)

When he first came to us, he was not aware that people were a good thing. On walks, when approached about my dogs, Bentley would stand off to the side with his head turned to avoid the new people. Now, like Seamus, he approaches people with a wag in his tail and a newfie lean for some petting.

He wags his tail and goes to who calls him. He did not start doing this for at least 8 months. Bentley has learned that people are good.

He loves children. When we have children over, he plays in the pool with them for hours, retrieving toys and. "Saving" them when they jump in. Bentley is usually my velcro dog. With kids around, he is stuck to them. When one leaves the room, he feels it's his duty to follow and make sure all is well. Last night some neices spent the night. When Bentley goes to bed, he's usually down for the count. Last night he was on guard duty. He went back and forth from my bedroom to where the girls were sleeping and eventually settled.down in the girl's room. I feel kind of bad that he doesn't have kids of his own to take care of, because he seems born for it!

I can't tell you how good it feels to watch this anxious, dirty, smelly, untrained mess turn into a family pet. It makes my heart happy.

This does my heart good to hear how far Bentley has come in such a short time, Suse. He didn't do this all on his own, though. You should be very proud of the work you've done with him to help him come out of his shell and build the kind of trust to let him be the dog he was meant to be.

I think you found the answer to keeping him in the backyard with you for longer periods of time - rent one of the neighbor kids! :D

That's just wonderful news, and I too wish Zeke had kids around here...now that the grandson has moved out, when he does come over, you can just tell he becomes so full of life and it seems that he's really missing him and much as I am!

I was drawn to Bentley the minute I met him. I could tell he had a lot of love to give. By the way, my Chumley does the Newf lean too.

Sue, under your patient guidance, you brought out all of Bentley's newf qualities! I can't wait to see him (and you!) again soon! Give Bentley a big hug from us!
