Ben and His New Diet

A call-out to Pete M. for helping me transition Ben to a fish (salmon, mackerel, tuna) and brown bread diet over the past few months. We've eliminated all processed food and I think.. I THINK..... Ben has slimmed down a bit. He's not due for a vet check anytime soon, so I haven't weighed him, but his ribs are more noticeable when I feel them, and his joints (shoulder, hips) more pronounced when he sits.

Keep in mind Ben topped out at 198 pounds, and any weight off him is good.

I never thought he was too heavy (and the vet said he was fine) but hauling that extra 30-40 pounds around cannot be good for him. He loves his fish/bread diet and is always eager for his food. :)

Thanks Pete!

Sounds GREAT. I am sure he feels better and more energetic or at least for Ben. :)

You can't just walk into your vet clinic and get him weighed? Shoot, we walk in to our clinic, and someone from the front desk if not busy will get up and turn on the scale without really asking. I bet we don't go 2 weeks without a weigh in. In fact even today we had to go to the pet boutique that is on the property to get some treats, and stopped in for a weigh-in and made his checkup and rabies shot appointment in July.

My vet has a scale in the waiting room for anyone to use at any time they are open.

Glad to hear about the weight loss. That is always a good thing.

Yeaaaaa Ben!! Vin and I discussed this type of diet before we even had newfs. As to what would newfs have been feed many moons ago??? Figured that's probably what families fed them. Glad to hear he's doing well. Thanks for sharing such diets Peter!

Sounds great! I really want to do this, maybe in the summer I can actually figure out how to make bread like you and Kristen suggested! :)

Hmmmmm Ben and Elvis seem to be cut from the same cloth on so many things. I'll have to think about making this switch too!

Re: weighing in, yes, I could definitely stop by just for a weigh-in, but Ben doesn't cooperate and it's a hassle. I will just wait until his next checkup. :)

The bread is easy! I bought a bread maker and it takes about 10 min to put it all together. I make a couple of loaves over the weekend and freeze one. I just have a couple of extra in there in case we are traveling over a weekend or something.

Maggie has been on this diet for about a month and is doing awesome! She definitely has more energy, even though we're getting into warmer weather.
